Jezebel-Password Protected Document

Thanks for your reply but I'm not quite sure how to clear the read-only
status in Explorer. I've clicked on the properties of the file and unchecked
the read only box but that didn't work. Is there something else I should be
doing? Thanks!

I dragged it onto my desktop from my disc...is that how you would copy it to
the hard drive?

You probably created a shortcut to that file. Try a copy and paste instead.

copied and pasted it to my desktop and unchecked the read-only status and I'm

If it is password-protected, you will need to have the password to open it.

Having copied the file to your desktop (which is a hard disc area) what
actually happens when you try to open that file with Word?

It pops up with a box saying: The document name or path is not valid. Try
these suggestions. *Check the file permission for the document or drive.
*Use the file open dialog box to locate the document.
So being that I burned it to a cd with a password I didn't think that would
cause any problems...unless it's a different problem with the file. Thanks.

You are likely trying to open a file with _NO_ extension by a drag-
and-drop onto the word processing icon on the desktop. When you do
this, somewhere in the bowels of the OS/Word combination,
"The System" fabricates a bogus file name with the extension ".doc"
appended. Since this file does not exist, you get an error message
such as you are seeing.

If Word is already open, this won't happen. In that case, the proper
file name (with _no_ extension) is passed to Word, and the file opens
(subject to passwords, read-only, etc. restrictions).

So, either: (1) rename your file with an explicit extension (e.g.,
myfile becomes myfile.doc); or, (2) after the failure, clear the
error message leaving Word active, and drag-and-drop the file
directly onto the active copy of Word.

Hope this helps! Your frustration level must be very high by now!
