Jet Database Engine Stopped?

A

Alex Moreau

This morning, while opening a program, I received the error message:

Error 3917

"The Microsoft Jet database engine stopped the process because you and
another user are attempting to change the same data at the same time."

It then opens the application anyway, but fails to open the 'mark up' file,
which is a file that holds all the text highlights of the app. I presume
that this is the file that XP believes is being accessed by more than one
user. Moving, renaming and then attempting to open the file from within the
app produces no change. No highlights appear. Attempting to open a back up
file of markup.txt produces the same results. No highlight, as though the
file were not opened.

These are highlights similar to MS Word text highlights. I am the only user
on this machine, and this occurs even when there are no other machines
running on the network (a small network).

I have tried restoring an Acronis image pre-dating the issue, hoping to
correct the error, but the same error occurs. The only user accounts on the
machine are my admin account, a guest account and an account called "ASP.NET
Machine A..." I tried deleting the 'ASP' account and restarting the machine,
but the error is still there.

I've been using this app for a few years and never had this issue before.
There were no major changes proceeding this issue, and even if there were,
the restoral of the Acronis image should have corrected any such issues.
Anyone have any ideas on what the issue here is?

Thanks,
Al

Opps...that should be markup.ovl.

Hi Patrick,
This seems to apply to systems running MS Access, which is not installed on
this machine. The only 'Office' program I'm running is MS Word. The
suggested fix is running Access repair utilities, which are not available.

I did neglect to mention that immediately following the 'JET' error messge,
another message appears stating:

"Error opening Markup File database".

ALso, the app that this error occurs upon opening is 'e-Sword'.

Thanks,
Al

Sounds like the app uses an Access database.

I guess it must. I have tried a repair on the program (no resolution) and a
control panel uninstall and then re-install of the program. No go. I guess
the next step is an XP repair install, but have an email in to tech support.
This XP install is only about a month old. I hate to see it go south so
soon...

Thanks,
Al

I don't think it is an OS issue. Wait for the application support gets back
to you or search for *.MDB The database is probably corrupt or at least
marked as suspect.

A search only turns up 4 .mdb files, and none of those seem related to the
problem app. 2 .mdb's are for another app. The other 2 are dnary.mdb and
ias.mdb, both in windows\system32\ias. There are none for the app in
question. Not sure what you mean by 'marked as suspect', but none seem out
of the ordinary.

I can't really say, as tech support just recommended deleting the file from
the program dir and starting the app. The file was then recreated and I
could import a back up. All went well, but unfortunately, my backup was a
month old. I didn't lose too much, but one always hopes to keep all one's
data.

Thanks for all your efforts.

See if there are any *.LDB files. Access calls these "record-locking
information" files.

Thanks, but no .ldb files at all on this machine.

Don't recognize that one, apparently a proprietary database. Anyway glad to
hear it's sorted.
