Occasionally my PC slows to a crawl. Task manager shows
me the CPU is running at 100% continuously, and the
culprit is always javaw.exe. Shutting down this process
clears the problem. I haven't been able to tell what I
do to start that process.

I'm running XP Pro on a Dell 4600, not having any other
problems. Most common apps lately are IE, Outlook
Express, Total Recorder, Excel, RealOne.

It didn't help me. And, lots of other complications with applications, too.

Javaw is the 'command', or DOS version, launcher for Java programs. You
have to identify what java program it is being called on to launch.
This *might* be something you run that does not obviously involve Java -
I have a digital radio broadcast receiver that uses one - but more
likely it is something running in startup. Run MSconfig.exe and look in
Startup, command line column, for anything referring to it or to WJView
and uncheck it. Only other thing is to see what stops working when you
abandon the process. If it is nothing you recognise, assume it is
spyware - get the latest AdAware from www.lavasoftusa.com and see what
it finds
