I note that during long boot-ups of WinXP home, the Task Manager shows that
the delay is caused by a long running javaw.exe.

Browsing the Web, I find that this is a common complaint. But I can't find
a definitive answer to these questions:

1. What does javaw.exe do?

2. What would be the likely downside to removing or temporarily renaming
it?

3. Would step 2 result in better boot-up time and/or performance?

I had prviously Googled and reasd this thread. My impression was that I'm
not alone, and that nobody directly answere my question.

Then reply to that thread or begin a new one. JAVAW.EXE is not a Windows
file.

Actually, you may find "javaw.exe" floating around in multiple folders, with
varying date stamps. If/when you work with them, be certain you have the
right one. On my system here I have 4 of them.

Do you have an HP printer? If so, it's often the ToolBox features and
javaw.exe in that folder causing the "problems" I learned from my research.
I can't recall enough details to explain it at all, but some patient
searching for javaw.exe will bring up relevant hits. I had to finally
remove the ToolBox for my HP Color Laserjet printer to get things working
well.
