Java

I just received a new computer with WinXP; IE6; AOL9 and
want to find out how I can tell if I have Java MVachine on
this computer and where I might be able to find that
information (version, etc.)
I tried to download a program and before it downloaded it
stated I did not have Java VM or porogram was defective.
Please advise and thanks.

Hi

Take a look at this post by Jim Byrd to get some information on how to check
your
MS JVM version as well as adding it to your OS installation::

http://groups.google.com/[email protected]

If you are running Windows XP with no MS JVM installed, start with
installing v. 3805 (disregard that the post say Win2000 SP4, it will
install on WinXP as well).

Greetings --

As the result of a lawsuit by Sun Microsystems, and the ensuing
settlement, Microsoft is no longer allowed to provide its own Java
Virtual Machine to Windows users. You can get almost the same
functionality by downloading Sun's version of Java from
http://java.sun.com/getjava/index.html. If you want the broader
capabilities of Microsoft's Java Virtual Machine, it is still
available from a lot of 3rd-party web sites, some of which are listed
here: http://www.java-virtual-machine.net/download.html.

If you do choose the Microsoft JVM, be sure to visit Windows
Update to apply a needed security patch.

Thank you. I found I have checked "MS VM JIT Comptroller
and Java Sun Use Java 2v1.42 for applet"
But as senior citizens we are having hard time with this
computer. When we are in IE6 we sometimes notice when we
click on a subject (for instance this message board), the
subject will load quickly. However, if we click on a
subject befow, the little green graph at bottom that
shows load progress will go very, very slowly and appear
to have stopped and subject (page) does not load. What
could be causing this slow (or no) loading of a page?
Thank you for any help.

Actually, your message has shown up 4 times. You probably have spyware
running on your computer. To clean it up, download and install the free
programs Spybot Search & Destroy from www.security.kolla.de and
Ad-aware from www.lavasoftusa.com. Be sure to update these programs
before running them. It is best to run antivirus and spyware removal
tools in Safe Mode. I assume you are running a current (post-2002
version using updated definitions) antivirus program also. If not, get
one ASAP.

Thank you. We are senior citizens and not at all
familiar with this "spyware or adware." So many, many
things to do. How to download, how to run, requirements,
etc.

Then call a good local computer repair person to come and 1) clean up
your computer; and 2) give you some training. I have many elderly
clients, and they find they are happier and more productive by doing
this. Ask friends for the name of someone they like.
