Java virtual machine?

Is it safe to download the Java virtual machine? I am getting the message
that I need this to be able to correctly view a couple of websites I want to
see, one being a Dutch website showing dressage videos.

I use Norton AV and Firewall and check for spyware and ads at least once
weekly. Will downloading Java open the door to viruses or Trojans?
