I seem to remember that when I installed XP it came with
the Microsoft VM and java plug-in. Is this true? I have
someone who doesn't have java installed nor the microsoft
vm buttons under the advanced tab in internet options.

There was a version of WinXP SP1 that was only available for a short time
that had the JavaVM. Original WinXP and the current SP1a do not have it.
