Java Console - hangs XP while starting

B

Ben Rum

I don't know if its a standard problem, but when accessing websites that
require the Java console to start, the OS hangs for about 1 minute while
Java crawls out of bed.

I know its not necessarily an XP problem, however it only happens with this
OS, so I was hoping someone may have some insights as to a remedy?

I've all the latest XP patches/updates & the latest Java console.. I am also
using both IE and Mozilla, and it happens for both browsers.

Thanks.

What version of Java do you have?

Is it 1.5.0_04-b05? If not, download the latest version. If you have this
version, try uninstalling Java and reinstalling again.

Yep, latest version 1.5.0_04-b05

I uninstalled & reinstalled, with no luck.. Still takes ages for Java
Console to start. Tried same thing on Win 2000 machine, and its not a
problem.

All previous Java updates had to be uninstalled seperately, which I thought
was odd.. But still.. no luck.

Immediately after installing, use the Java control applet in Control
Panel and use the "Delete Files" in the Java Temporary category.
Also, have you run a cross-check A/V scan to make sure you do
not have any of the Java specific viruses ? Also, does your XP
instance have the Microsoft Java VM installed ?

Done.

yep, fully updated AV, all scanning options, nothing found.
Also, does your XP instance have the Microsoft Java VM installed ?

Nope.

I'm all updated/refreshed/AV up the yin-yang.. It's something to do with XP,
seeing as it is a lot quicker on Win2K.. Am I right?

I only use Win2K in a Virtual PC, but never really noticed a large
or perceptible speed difference. One other thing, have you checked
the C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files and made sure that
you only have "2" Java Runtime Environment Add-ins shown ? I
would also run HiJackThis or another BHO checker and make
sure that the Java plug-in hasn't been restricted in anyway.

Yep, only 2 Java add-ins.. Nothing else suspicious there, I can account for
all of the other add-ins there.

This isn't just my pc, its similar for some other people, both my home pc
(WinXP P4 laptop) and work pc (WinXP P4 desktop), but not on my test machine
(W2k) and servers I am working with (W2K)

When I start Java Console from Control Panel, it also takes ages for it to
open.. Also, while the Java Console the CPU is at 100%.. I've got a P4, so
what else is being done..?

Is there some XP Software check type thing going on when programs start..?

I can only add, that I have exactly the same problem, perhaps even worse. The
computer hangs big time when I open the Java console, and half the time
windows crashes. I just got a new computer with XP home edition. My old
computer did not have this problem (
