Java applet boxes on webpages come up empty?

Hi there,

A friend is running XP Pro with Internet Explorer (v.6, I think).
Someone recently fiddled with his PC, and now when he clicks on
pictures on websites which open a smaller box (java, presumably?)
there's nothing in the little box. For instance, clicking on a picture
of a shoe on a running site is supposed to show a larger picture of
the shoe, but an empty box opens instead.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

Many thanks for any help.

He needs to download Java. Here's a link:
