Jar executable files open in Winzip or save as zip not jar

G

Guest

I've got a problem with jar executables on our intranet which no longer run
in java, rather they open into winzip. If you download and save the file, it
also defaults to saving it as a winzip file, although you can tell it to save
it as a jar file. Running the jar from the desktop is fine, it knows its a
java executable and the program runs rather than opening winzip, so the file
associations seem to be okay there.

Is there some preference or helper application that I can reset to run these
programs in java instead of winzip? or am I destined to have winzip open
everything from now on.

Hi Joanne :)

You don't mention the version of Windows you are using, but, you may have
lost the file association for the .jar files. Try the following:

Go to Windows Explorer (not IE) and navigate to any .jar file (perhaps in
the Java folder>lib>
Right click on the file and select open with
There should be a Java (TM) file that appears in the Recommended Programs
for this file. Highlight it and then check the box that says "Always use
selected program to open this kind of file"

If that file is not listed, then you will need to add it to the list.

While still in Windows Explorer, click on Tools>Folder Options.File Types
Scroll down the list on the right and see of there is a JAR and see what is
referenced as the associated program. If there is a program other than the
JAVA, then you will need to change it to the correct program. To do this,
you will need to highlight the JAR, then click the Change button. If the
program is not in this list, then you will need to click the Browse button
to find the correct program.

Navigate to the Java folder in Program Files>Java>1.5.0_ (or whichever
version you have installed)>bin>java.exe and highlight it, then click Open.
This will set the Java as the associated file for the JAR. Then click the
box that says "Always use selected program to open this kind of file" and OK
out.

See it that will reset the file association for the jar files. If not, then
uninstall the Java from the Add/Remove programs and reinstall it to
re-establish the association.

You should update your scripting engine as well. For 2000 and XP go to
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...43-7e4b-4622-86eb-95a22b832caa&DisplayLang=en
The install includes a new jscript.dl

Hope this helps.

Thanks for your reply. I've got Windows XP Pro.

The file Associations in Windows are fine. As I say if I run a jar file in
Windows, it runs with the java runtime application, and the application runs
as expected. The problem only occurs when downloading & running applications
from IE.

Hi Joanne :)

Try uninstalling and then downloading a .jar file. See if it works as it
should. If so, then reinstall winzip. If the problem still exists,
uninstall and try the following:

7z Self-Extract Setup
http://www.7-zip.org/
It works as well as Winzip, is more secure, and does not have as much bloat.

Hope this helps.

I've uninstalled winzip, and the java applications. Reinstalled Java run
time, but ie still thinks the application is a zip file, and then uses the
windows XP built in archive app, to open the folder. So I suspect it would
make no difference if I installed a different zip application, ie would still
expect it would be a zip file. It must be something in ie. I have even
logged in as a different user on the computer and the proble is the same for
that account, so it's a global problem on the computer rather than just in a
profile.

I'm starting to think that maybe I should use another browser and tell IE to
go jump.

My guess is that it could be the MIME type is overriding the extension.

To test that idea you could toggle the Security settings option:
Open files based on content, not file extension
(Internet Security Properties, Security Settings dialog, Miscellaneous section)

Alternatively in Folder Options for the zip file type you could try
disassociating it from winzip and force it to prompt every time.

Please post an example publicly accessible link if you need more help.

Good luck
