Japanese text-display support

I have a Japanese calligraphy program called "Fude gourmet". I have used this before without any trouble.
However, I have had to reinstall XP and the program. Now, the windows, as well as some necessary program features, will not display Japanese text (they have the "???", random symbols, or 'block' characters instead).

Any ideas what's going on?

With the reinstalls I'd guess that you simply need to re-enable language
support.

Start --> Control Panel --> Regional and Language Options
Languages tab
check Install files for East Asian languages

Did that before. No banana. Can English XP even diplay Japanese in its windows/menus?
Is it maybe something missing from the Japanese XP that may have been overwritten by the English XP?

Figured it out. I had to go into the advanced properties for language and enable "Japanese" under "Non-unicode programs".
All is well.
