J2RE Installation

1) I use Microsoft Windows 2000 (w/ Service Pack 4) and
Internet Explorer 6.
2) I was having difficulty with my Sun's J2RE (Java
Runtime Environment).
3) I removed J2RE gracefully through the Control Panel's
Add/Remove Programs.
4) I downloaded j2re-1_4_2_03-windows-i586-p-iftw.exe from
Sun's website.
5) But now when I try to install j2re-1_4_2_03-windows-
i586-p-iftw.exe, I keep receiving the message: "Java(TM)
update cannot retrieve version information from the
targeted directory."
6) I did make sure to completely delete the "Java" folder
from the "C:\Program Files" directory.

I am in the middle of a project with my math students and
YOUR PROMPT ASSISTANCE WILL BE ENORMOUSLY APPRECIATED.

Back and remove this key in the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\JavaSoft

Then try the install again. This is assuming you do not have the j2sdk installed.
