I've lost my rich text document!

my OS is Win XP

I opened a wordXP attachment from my hotmail (webmail)
account
clicked download
clicked open
it opened with Wordpad (I don't have Office on my laptop)
then I made several changes to my file
clicked "File" then "Save"
It said it had to save it as rich text (I clicked "Okay")
Then I kept working on it for 3.5 hours saving with the
save button periodically.

Now the file doesn't exist. I've searched for it by size,
file type, contains text, date modified, every possible
way including system and hidden files. Unfortunately, I
also opened many text documents before realizing that I
could have accessed it with Wordpad (using the "File" drop
down menu it would have been one of the 4 recent docs
listed).

What is the default path for a rich text document (that
already has a name) when you hit "Save" in wordpad
(remember it was opened up from a hotmail message as an
attachment)

I tried the same method with another (much less important)
attachment, made changes, and can access the file through
Wordpad but it doesn't show up on any search either. What
can I do??? I have to give this report tomorrow :(

Hi,

Check \temp folders, but you are probably out of luck. You should save the
document from the email to your local hard drive, then open it and work on
it. If you opened it and made changes, then saved it back to the email
server, the changes are probably lost.

Is is probably in your temporary internet files folder if it is
anywhere. When opening documents like this that are attached to
hotmail messages, the first time you save choose "save as" and specify
a location that you commonly use to store your files.

See if the file you were working on is in your temporary internet files
folder. Open Internet Explorer and select Tools, Internet Options. On
the General tab click the Settings button and then View Files. This
will open a folder with probably thousands of files in it. Sort the
files by name and see if the document you were working on is in there.

Hello C Baley,
Are you logged into the OS with the same user account?
The default save location is the My Documents folder of the logged on user.
If you are logged on as another user you do see other users document
folders by default. If you are an administrator you can view them however.

Are you searching hidden files and folders and system files and folders?
The default it not to.
It may also be copied to a temp Internet folder

c:\documents and settings\%username%\local settings\Temporary Internet
Files\********
goto a cmd prompt ( Start Run CMD)
change to that folder.
Then do a dir *.rtf /s /a to see if you can locate the file.
I do not think this folder is searched

Thanks Tom

I thought of that. The file that existed in my Temp.
Internet Files was the original attachment, not the "save"
with any changes.

I usually do a "Save as" but I was working on my report at
4:00 am and wasn't "with it". Rest assured I won't be
doing this again. Surely I can't be the only idiot who has
done this? ;)

"If you opened it and made changes, then saved it back to
the email
server, the changes are probably lost."

That's what I would have thought (I thought I may have
saved it to the email server),

But, I recreated the same situation with another
attachment and managed to open it again (after shutting
down and not logging on to the internet) by going through
Wordpad's dropdown "File" menu. Therefore, it has to exist
somewhere on my hard drive, doesn't it? I think it must be
in a format that only Wordpad can read though, because I
can't get to it through exploring or searching my entire
hard drive (including perusing all of the temp files).

So wherever the second attachment (with the changes I
saved) exists is where my report must exist, logically.
Unless it gets dropped/deleted/sent to the lost file
vortex when 4 more Wordpad files are opened.

Thanks for the suggestions.
Does anyone know the path for documents that appear in
(and can be opened from) the File menu?

Thanks.

I have searched in all profiles under hidden and system
files too.

The copy I found in my Temp. Internet files was the
original, unchanged attachment :(

I can still access my test attachment through the "File"
menu recent documents in Wordpad, but it doesn't exist
in "My Documents" (for any of the profiles) either. Hence
my confusion.

Is there anywhere else it could reside?

This may be off the wall, but if you opened it in the web view of hotmail,
the file might be on the web rather than in your computer. I know there's a
folder where it stores emails you've composed but not sent, so perhaps the
changed file is in one of those folders. It's worth a shot.

You could also look at "my recent documents" and see if it might not have
fallen off there. Or create another file the same way, then look at it in
"my recent documents" right-click and choose properties. It shows the path
to the file.

I realize that I should have chosen Save As, I usually do.

The files that I found in the Internet Temp folder (the
one you directed me to) is the original attachment, not
the one with my 3.5 hours of changes. I guess that it is
lost forever.

If you open a document from your e-mail you MUST
CHOOSE "Save as..." the first time you save it and pick a
proper location for it.
Your e-mail software will open the document so oyu can
view it from a Temporary folder. Internet Explorer
automatically saves it in the "Temporary Internet Files"
folder.
To get this file back, assiming it hasn't been purged form
the folder yet:
You need to enable "Hidden files and folders" view to find
this file.
Click My Computer > View menu > Folder Options... > [View]
tab > (o) Show Hidden files and folder > {OK}.
Now you'll find the file in: C:\Documents and Settings\%
username%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files. (The
Local Settings folder is a hidden folder, that's why your
searches failed)

That list is stored in the registry at
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Applets\Word
pad\Recent File List. You'll see File1, File2, etc in the right pane
of regedit at that location. Each entry will have a data value
containing the complete path to the file.
