iTunes install and uninstall problems

S

I wanted to remove iTunes from my PC, but my PC complained that it
couldn't find missing "strings". I attempted a reinstall, but got
"1628 installation failed " message. When my PC boots up however, it
loads iTunesHelper and iPodService and mDNSResponder and there are
shortcuts on the desktop, but no entry in the Add/Remove Programs list.
I have followed the advice on Consumer Install Shield (eg emptied temp
folder, tried to use the Windows install clean up tool) but still can
neither install, nor unistall iTunes, nor Quicktime. Any further steps
that anyone can suggest? I have Win XP with SP2, Soundblaster Audigy,
Athlon 1800+, ATI Radeon 9600

Right before you try to reinstall ITunes (and Quicktime for that matter),
open Task Manager and 'End' any applications still open before reinstalling.
All secondary apps like iTunesHelper, iPodService & mDNSResponder must all
closed before reinstalling. I'm assuming Quicktime has the same issues.

-- I have the same problem and none of the fixes at InstallShield.com work.
I have scrubbed the Registry, killed temp files all over the place, shutdown
services, etc. i have not tried to reinstall Windows Installer 'cause I
can't find an XP SP2 version at InstallShield. Anyhow, Installer seems to
work fine with anything but iTunes!

I also get an error message when I try to start iTunes after the botched
install--

"The ordinal 21 could not be located in the dynamic link library
MAPI32.dll" The title of the error frame is "iTunes.exe-Ordinal Not Found"

I have downloaded a fresh copy of iTunes and tried that. No go.

I unistalled the iPod software also thinking that it might be the culprit.
No go. Then I tried to reinstall it from the CD supplied by Apple. No go.
It tries to install both iTunes and iPod and hangs.

I run XP Home, SP2 with all updates through last Tuesday. Help would sure
be appreciated.

Did Windows Installer get corrupted somehow?

Thank you for your help,

Hey - If you are using the new version 5. Try going back to
4.x. I couldn't see my ipod after going to 5.0..

-- Thanks, but I tried that. I went back to v 3.5 and that didn't work
either.
