Italics disappear when style code is applied

Hello,
When I apply a style code (from a template), italics in the existing text
often disappear. I've been told that this is a glitch in Word that this
happens when the particular paragraph/section being formatted contains more
italics characters than non-italics (then all text within the para/section
will change to roman text). Is this correct or is there a way to retain the
italics.

Many Thanks

I've cursed this glitch numerous times. However, it has been my experience
that if I have an entire paragraph selected when I apply the style, then the
entire paragraph converts to the kind of type specified in the style. In
other words, if the style I am applying calls for a regular type font, but a
few words in a selected paragraph are italicized, those words will convert to
regular font.

If I have the same paragraph with a few italicized words in it, and I'm
applying the same style that calls for a regular font, if I just have my
cursor in the paragraph (rather than selecting the paragraph) the few
italicized words will stay italicized. However, if my cursor is in one of
the words that is italicized, that individual word will change to regular
font while the rest of the italicized words will stay italicized.

I wish it worked that way all the time, but it doesn't seem to. The glitch
seems a bit capricious.

I hope this helps.

Hi Fred,
Thanks, but unless I'm performing this incorrectly, it doesn't seem to work
that way. I suppose the only way to deal with these instances is to style up
to the italic characters and format those separately.
Best wishes,
Tom
