It couldn't be this easy????

Hello....,

I'm having system freeze/lock issues. It could be 30 seconds after start-up
or 30 minutes before the lock up. My MCP friend took it for a few days and
he advised that it never locked-up??? I get it back to my place and the same
exact issue occured again....and continues....

***A friend with the same issue simply bought a new mouse, plugged it in and
the problem was fixed.....??? I seriously doubt it's the mouse causing a
100% freeze of the system??? Is it at all possible???***

Thanks much for any suggestions!!!!!

Hi,

Actually yes it could. I am considering a problem I am having with my
computer might be my trackball. Only exception for me it, it locks up on
one program only. That program is almost complete dependent on the mouse.
Sometimes a piece of hardware can create a program conflict. So try a
different mouse and see if that solves the problem.

Hi

It's possible. Have you installed the latest drivers from the Logitech web
site and checked to see that the batteries are good? Have you tried the
mouse on another PC to see if you get the same problem?

Hey Jeffrey....I've got a Logitech optical mouse that came with the sys....so
I'm sure it's crappy. I'll try a MS ball mouse later today.

Thanks much for the VERY quick reply....and sorry for the dupe question
above this one.....When I posted I got an error msg. saying it didn't go
through?? I usually post on a different board @ MS XP support that doesn't
require this MSN/Passport login crap, but my desktop link I've used for like
2 years took me to this page instead... Do MS MVP's work this board as
well??

Thanks again!

Will...,

No batteries in this one, and no, I haven't tried it anywhere else...

Hey Will....please read my reply to Jeffery above re: a different MS XP
support page if you will and advise...

Great to see MVP's in here.... Yall friggin' rule!

Thanks much, Sir!

Hi,

Actually Logitech is pretty good, just it seems the drivers for it are
picky. Windows has its own drivers for it, then Logitech has theirs. I`m
using a cordless USB marble trackman for all 3 of my computers. So best
suggestion is to try a different mouse or unistall the drivers to your
mouse, reboot the comp, let it detect it, but try to install the drivers
from the Logitech software instead of letting windows install its driver.
If that doesn`t resolve the problem, then most likely you have a bad mouse
you can feed to a cat you don`t like.

Hi

The MS News Groups via the CDO Interface will need a Passport login. I'm
not sure which News Group you were using before. Was it on a non-MS Server?

Yes. often a result of the mouse driver and the video driver arguing
over which controls the pointer. It is easy to check on - Control Panel
- Display - Settings, Click Advanced, and on the Troubleshoot page
reduce the acceleration slider one notch or two. If one does it, there
is negligible loss of performance: if two are needed look for updated
video drivers from the maker's site. Or of course different mouse and
drivers

There's your problem, seriously:

Don't be mean. If the OP isn't playing games that require top of the
line processing power, that processor is just fine for surfing, office
apps, older games and the like. To the OP, yes a mouse could cause
lockups. What you need to do is figure out what exactly is different at
your house from your friend's house. When you troubleshoot, do one
thing at a time and test. Try a different mouse. Work with it for a
while. If you don't get any lockups, you know it was your Logitech
mouse, which could have been faulty. If it locks up with a different
mouse, try a different keyboard. Look at your physical setup - do you
have the computer in an enclosed space where it could be overheating?
Do you have it plugged directly into the wall socket, or do you have
extension cords plugged into surge strips plugged into extension cords
(you get the drift)? Is the outlet you are using old and maybe you need
an adapter to make it three-prong?

Start there and let us know what you find out.

What I meant was the athlon 1.4 is prone to locking up.

Oh, I see. I thought you meant not having a faster processor was lame!
Please accept my apologies for misinterpreting your post. I always use
Athlons to build my boxen, but I haven't ever bought that particular
one. Maybe it *is* the processor, but if the OP's box works fine at his
friend's house, then we know the issue isn't with the processor. I've
actually had a situation like that when a client's machine worked great
here at the shop but lousy at home. It did turn out that they were
plugging the machine into one of those $5.00 "surge" strips which in
turn was plugged into an extension cord which went to a 2-prong wall
outlet in an older home. So that's why I was trying to get the OP to
figure out what is different between his house and his friend's.

Cheers,

What I found with the athlon 1.4 was that it was the boards that were the
problem not the processor. When I bought mine it took 3 boards to get one
that worked and we had one at work that locked a couple of times a day.
