ISTBar

Sorry, I didn't make myself very clear in the first post -
I have repeatedly removed ISTBar using various tools,
including the Symantec one, and also manually. After
removing ISTBar, I can see no trace of it.

However, intermittently after during the course of the
day MS AntiSpyware pops up telling me that ISTBar is
attempting to install again, and offers to remove it
(which I know doesn't work, but I do it anyway). I then
find it has installed, and use a tool to remove it again,
find no traces, and the saga continues.

I have also had the odd pop-up (which is blocked by
AntiSpyware, at least it tells me so...) having not
opened a browser window.

Driving me crazy, wish I'd stuck to another well-known
browser minus active-x controls.....

Have you tried looking through the system explorers (tools, advanced tools,
system explorers) manually, looking for unknown items, or ones with the
names of vendors such as Claria/Gain for example? You can block, rather
than remove, using these explorers, so if you are uncertain, you can reverse
the action later. The explorers also know about known and critical objects
where blocking would have significant consequences--and won't let you block
them.
