Hi,

wonder if i could get some help here with outlook 2003. In the content of
email i received today, there's an email address of someone i know. Usually
when you click on it, it should automatically bring up an outlook with the
address filled out on the "To" field. It didn't do that but instead, it
brought up Internet browser (IE). On top of that, it didn't only fork out one
IE but lots of it (about 53 IEs browsers were open).

My question is whether there is something i need to tweak in the outlook's
settings to resolve this issue.

Thank you in advance

I feel your pain. I've had this problem for a while now! I'm running
Outlook 2007, not 2003, but the same issue...I get about 70+ IExplorer
windows in my case. I assume you're running IE7?

Please search these two threads via Google to which there were no
solutions posted:

"Clicking on mailto link in OL2007 hangs OL & other processes" posted
8/1/2007

"KB entry 312346 for Outlook 2007 - incorrect and did not solve the
problem!" posted 8/6/2007

Please see if KB 312346 helps you out...it didn't help me.

My guess it's a registry entry in my user settings that is corrupted,
because another user on the same PC does *not* have the same problem.
Which might also be a solution...create a new user for my account, but
it would be a pain to migrate all my settings. You may try that just to
verify the work around.

Feel free to contact me by email if you want to try to figure this out.

Looking through the registry for keys named "mailto" I found one that
raises an error:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\mailto

When regedit finds that key, it also says:

---------------------------
Error Opening Key
---------------------------
Cannot open mailto: Error while opening key.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

I wonder if its because I'm currently logged on after I did a
switch-user, and that key is opened by the other user (or something), or
if there's a genuine problem with that entry.

Could you (anyone) find that key in your registry and list the contents
of it? Thanks.

Thank you Himanshu for your reply.

I think it's to do with Office 2007. It's actually not on my machine. It's
on a friend of mine. But since I helped him right from the beginning, now
it's become my problem. what happen was I had the office 07 installed before
and then removed it from his laptop. i then installed office 03 on his
machine instead and started to get this issue ever since. I think it's to do
with office 07. It works fine with my machine that's got office 03 right from
the beginning.

And i think you're right, it might be to do with the registry. I'll list the
contents of it as soon as i get hold of his machine.

Thank you in advance
