Issue opening Word files in IE Browser

We have a problem with opening Word or other office files when being
accessed via IE 6. We get the standard "Open, Save, Cancel" dialog box and
when we select Open, on some machines it creates a new IE6 window that is
split in half with no way to expand it. We have tried multiple machines and
some work fine, others don't. We have turned off all pop-up blockers but
that doesn't change anything. Has anyone seen this behavior? What types of
files and/or settings are being used to open an IE version of Word within a
browser? TIA

Bill,

IE 6 is a web browser. If you have MS Office Word installed, a Word document
(file extension .doc) should open in Word. Likewise, an Excel document (file
extension .xls) will open in Excel. A Word document saved as a web page
(file extension .htm or .html) will open in IE 6.
