Issue burning to dvd - from computer

I am trying to burn a dvd from a downloaded movie. At first I was having
problems even viewing the movie on my computer after download- I could only
pick up the audio. But, after reading some posts, I downloaded codec XVID
MPEG-4. Now I am able to watch the "video" on my computer as well as receive
audio. Assuming everthing was in order, I tried to burn the movie to a dvd
(currently have DVD-R)using Windows Media Player. When I listed the movie
from the "Library" and clicked on it to burn, an error message popped up.
Here are the stats:
1. Error code: COOD1199
2. Error text: Cannot Play the File, An Error Occurred
3. About Windows Media Player: 10.00.00.3990
4. Operating System Version:
Microsoft Windows XP
Media Center Edition
Version 2002
Service Pack 2
I am frustrated as I have been working on this for awhile. (I am also having
problems burning my home-movies from camcorder to dvd, but am hoping it will
resolve with the same solution as this dvd-burn problem I am having). Since
everything seems to be working right on computer, I don't know why I can't
transfer to dvd.
Are there any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks!

Which third party software are you using to create the DVD? Remember XP has
no native DVD burning or decoding software. You need something like Roxio,
Nero, PowerDirector, WinDVD Creator etc.

Ok, I'm a little bit clueless on this. I don't know anything about needing a
third party software. Can you give me a little info on them? Is it something
I need to go out and buy from an electronic store, or can I download from
programs in the computer, etc.? Thanks for your help!

XP cannot burn to a DVD by itself. If your PC came with a DVD burner, the
PC manufacturer probably installed Nero or Roxio on it... possibly a lite
version.

If you purchased the burner and installed it yourself, check the box. There
should again be a software CD in it with a lite version of the burning
software.

If you need to buy something.... www.roxio.com, www.nero.com. Both will
burn data and video DVDs. If all you need is to burn video DVDs, then also
consider www.gocyberlink.com and www.intervideo.com.

As far as I knew, we did purchase the computer with a dvd burner. However, I
don't know what program. How do I check to see if its installed? Thanks again!

I have the Microsoft MCE that was preinstalled on my hp computer. I think
"Muvee Maker" is the default (I had Sonic but the trial expired). I MAY be
wrong about that being the default.. I had one heck of a time finding a movie
recorded to HD by the MC. Finally I learned the file extension is *.DVR.MS. I
ran a search, then an advanced search since i knew the exact date I recorded
it. Still, I couldn't find the file. If I remember correctly , you have to
find it in "ALL Users" then "Recorded TV". I was looking in HP Administrator
.. It seems like the Media Center and the PC do not communicate with each
other. I've been trying to burn this movie (recoreded from TV) since March
4th.
My movie is too long for the default DVD burner. I DL'd free compression
software that will make it smaller than the MC can BUT... I have to change
the .DVR.MS to a different format. I'm still trying to figure that out LOL.
Many times I have been told to "uninstall" then "reinstall" stuff to make
it work. If you can do that with your burner and the FORMAT is correct (good
luck- I'm not getting it yet) maybe it will work.
If I learn anything else, I'll let you know.

The issue is a bit complex all round, the OP "downloaded" a movie in mpeg4
format, this is a highly compressed format aimed for streaming etc.
Playback in media player is not the same as being able to burn a format
to DVD. I suspect it is an issue of converting the mpeg4 to DVD compliant
mpeg2, of which MM cannot do.
