isntalling win xp pro problems

Wonder if anybody can help. Had a drive failure so brought a new 160 gig drive. Bios recognises it but when installing xp pro from cd it gets to the starting windows screen ( just before the repair / new installation screen then freezes totally. Tried this on a few versions and still the same.... any ideas before i turn it into a toaster ???
 
Try running the disk utility for the HD the mfgr usually supplies with the
new HD, and then try your OS Installation.
