unwanted dual boot after clean isntall of XP

I did a clean install of XP on what was previously the boot drive (SATA -
W2000 Pro) of my box. There was/is another drive...was "F"... that was set
as a master on the IDE channels containing an older W2000 Pro setup.

Xp installed fine on my SATA drive after reformatting...but...now when I
start if the XP cd is not in the bay...I get a system boot
failure...?...and...if it is...I get a choice for booting on a dos
screen...new XP or old (Drive F) W2000 ?

Also...I just noticed that my main drive...the SATA...is configured as drive
"D"...and the older backup W2000 drive is now Drive "C" in the XP system ?

How do I get rid of the dual boot option...which I didn't want nor realize
was being isntalled...and switch the drive letters so "D" (new XP clean
install) is now C and hopefully will boot ok without the XP CD in the tray ?

Thanks, Tim

Boot into the BIOS and remove the old drive from the list of boot devices.

How is that going to help?
The old drive must contain the boot files or it wouldn't be called C.

Tim,
I hope that you did a backup.
The only way to have XP on C is to reinstall XP.

Did you have to install the SATA drivers (press F6 and have the drivers on a
floppy)?

Thanks guys...yes I did use F6 although I don't know what would have
happened if I didn't. An internet site that discussed installing XP with
SATA said that was necessary...and I know W2000 install disk required it
too..so I just did..?

The second drive (now C) is the original drive in this system..but was
functioning fine as the second drive (F) under W2000 with the same SATA
controller.

All I have now is XP on the reformatted SATA...so I can re-install XP if
that will solve the matter...but of course...I'm hoping there's an easier
way ? (I'm assumong I need to disconnect the second drive for a new
install...except that is where the Windows verification is from (using XP
Pro update)

XP Pro upgrade, not update.

There is nothing wrong with XP being on D.

You could borrow or buy a Windows CD to qualify for the upgrade.

Can you change the boot order in the Bios?

The boot order is already set to the SATA...then "boot card'....then old
hard drive
The old drive will eventual just be for storage and back up...this is my
lady's PC so I think I will just reformat with the HD disconnected( I have a
couple old Windows install disks)....I could live just fine with the "D" but
she may get confused and or goof something up along the way...thanks !
