Is XP causing this?

I've been running Thief II: Metal Age for a while now on Windows XP
home edition. However, recently it has caused a major crash whenever I
try to go to the load saved game screen.
Thief II crashes, Control Centre crashes, CTsys Vol.exe crashes and
then explorer crashes. Finally I end up with an error message:

An exception occurred while trying to run
"E:\windows\system32\NvMcTray.dll, NvTaskbarinit"

XP then goes into classic mode and I have to reboot to restore it.

I've deleted and reinstalled the game into different directories and,
according to AVG, there's no virus. Is an XP update the cause?

Thank you for your time.

Those error messages have to do with some Nvidia programs installed with
your video drivers. Did you recently update your video drivers? If so,
roll them back.

Otherwise, try not having those extra Nvidia programs running. You don't
need them.
