is word 97 fully compatible with word 2000 documents?

by word 2000 or word 2003 will he be able to view them correctly?

For that situation, just save the Word document in the earlier
format from the "Save as" option box. Alternately, just save
the document as a Rich Text file (.rtf).

It depends on the feature used in the Docs. 97 onwards is one file format. But versions do things that earlier ones can't. You can set options not to use features not available on 97.

Probably not, because these programs have extra facilities, included
into the file format, that 97 does not know about. When you save the
files, select the File type (in the bottom pane of the Save As dialog
box) to be a word 97 type. Word 2003 has a
Word97-2003 & 6.0/95 - RTF (*.doc)
entry that should be readable by any version of Word - the item to
choose in Word 2000 would be a bit different but easy enough to
identify. This may warn that you are losing some formatting that the
document includes, but it should not be serious: load it back to take a
look
