Is Vista now safe to install?

O

OldGrantonian

When my Dell laptop arrived in June 2007 it was pre-loaded with Vista. Due to
the many reported problems, I immediately wiped Vista and installed WinXP
Home from my old Dell laptop.

Dell are going to send me a replacement hard drive in a couple of days. So,
is it now safe to install Vista?

If the answer is "yes", are there any recommendations about what Service
Packs I should, or should not, install?

BTW: I'm not really interested in the *individual* opinion of whichever kind
person(s) reply to my post. I'm more interested in knowing what the "average"
Vista user-base thinks. Any links to previous user polls might be useful.

The question is why would YOU need Vista? Microsoft isn't downplaying
Vista and pushing Windows 7 for no reason, you know.

Hi,

It was safe when you got it. The vast majority of issues were with a)
installing it on older hardware that did not meet specifications and did not
have readily available drivers - if any at all and b) commonly used utility
programs not updated to be compatible yet. The first one, "a", was solved
for you by the manufacturer as OEM's generally build hardware around the
operating system specifications, you already had compatible hardware and
drivers for it. The second one, "b", is largely resolved as typically
software vendors lag 6-12 months behind the release of the operating system
to update their software accordingly. Most times this means a newer version
of the program needs to be used.

Yes, you should install the only available service pack (SP1).

It always was safe to install Vista. You should have worked with it before
deleting it.

There were problems with some older computers, that did not have enough
memory, and such problems.

Yes. And it was safe in June 2007. It was also safe at RTM in November
2006, when I installed it here.

Please note that no matter how good it is, no piece of software is
perfect, and when it first comes out, you always see a flurry of
reported problems. Those reports reflect the experience of a
particularly vocal, but relatively small group of people. And in many
cases, it reflects their doing things wrong, because they were
ignorant of the right things to do.

There has only been one service pack, SP1, and it's been fine. My view
is that everyone should stay up to date with service packs as they get
released.

yeah sure it was safe (ironic tone).... LOL have you signed your soul to
microsoft? Why do you lie?

Must I provide this proof that vista sucked big time before sp1

This is only a small funny example of how much vista sucked ..... but
vistas crap quality is no laughing matter!

Now (SP1) it sucks a little less but it still sucks..

because no number of service packs will fix vista.

only and if they make windows7 good, that will be a good "vista SE".

Both of which corrected themselves and which hasn't happened for the longest
time. The rest of us are in the closing part of 2008, looking forward to
2009.. please check the date on your computer. You appear to have much
catching up to do..

There is tons and tons of proof... lol vista was a bucket of crap... now
they just added some cream on top of the crap.

vista is still slow fat and stupid... they are trying to address this in
windows7 or perhaps you don't know this yet????

You have too much catching up to do!

IDIOT

No contradicts.. Vista was released Nov 17, 2006. By June 2007, a great many
issues had been fixed..

gesh, no one should ever expect a unbiased and truthful answer from an MVP
regarding Vista

the best a very honest mvp can do is avoid to reply or give an answer that
a politic would admire.

vista has become microsofts blunder of the decade... its better off
forgotten

I should not reply to please you?

If you do not want a reply from an MVP, it would be best not to address any
of us. I have no intention of remaining quiet just because you think that I
should..

This formally terminates any further discussion with you..

XP is faster, Vista has many features removed, and Vista is also
problematical for many users. Stick with XP if you have the option -
Vista has no known advantages.

Sorry, wrong concept. You will find people that love Vista and people
that hate it. You can read all sorts of reviews and articles from
"industry professional" but none of them matter since they too are
opinions.

Put me in the "hate it" category - it is a bug ridden, over bearing,
poorly design POS. I'd install XP in a minute if it ran on my latest
laptop.

I installed Windows Vista on all my three machines here at the end of 2006,
I had no issues, granted I had been running beta versions for most of 2006
and so had worked out how Windows Vista works - yes it does work differently
to Windows XP, but once you get used to it you'll find it is far better.

For example in Windows XP you had to navigate your way around a maze of
menus to open the calculator, now I just press the Windows key on my
keyboard, 'c' then 'a' and then enter, without digging through the old
menus. Having search right on the Start Menu, in focus is worth it alone,
no longer does it take 5 seconds to launch an application, you can just type
a few letters and hit enter, all done in less than a second.

Assuming people have compatible hardware and applications, I've been
recommending everyone to use since it since release in January 2007
(upgrading an existing machine is a different matter as then it is a
price/benefit decision too). I generally recommend people install the
latest service packs when they're released, in the case of Windows Vista
this is SP1.

The hoo-har about Windows Vista is the same we've seen with any release of
Windows. Back in 2001 and 2002, it was all against Windows XP with its
memory hungry, bright blue fisher-price style UI and lack of compatibility.
Some people just like to complain because a new release, is shockingly -
different to the old one.

shut up you pawn of microsft!

Apparently, beyond the inability to spell, you also do not regularly read my
posts or you would know that I am decidedly not a "pawn" in any sense of the
word. I find it interesting that you post via a product of theirs that I
vehemently detest - live mail.
His computer will lose 20% performance if he installs that abomination
known as vista

Substantiate that statement. Please. Make sure to cite your sources so as to
support your stance, opinions mean nothing.

Aside from turning off user account controls I have had no problems with
Vista SP1 installed on my Compaq notebook purchased in August.

MS dumbed down the built-in Vista defragger so that it is practically
useless. I use a third-party defragger about once a month.

He is incorrect: the performance degradation is much worse than that.
See MS's hardware specifications for XP vs. Vista for more
information.
