Is Umart any good?

D

Dazza

Below is a copy of an email I sent to Umart regarding some components I
intend to buy for my new system.
Further below is their reply, which didn't seem to answer any of the
questions I asked (well, all but one)
It seems they might be reluctant to detail freight & other costs prior to
purchase?
I find it really annoying to have asked seemingly simple questions to get
such a lame reponse!

Has anyone got any positive or negative dealings with Umart they care to
share with me before I spend almost $3k with them?

(BTW, any comments on the system?)

Email as sent to sales Manager.............

Hi,

I have a few questions regarding an order I wish to place with you.
I intend to purchase the components for a complete system.

How much is the freight to the NSW Central Coast (Post Code 2263)?
Does the freight charge include insurance?
Do you offer a build/assembly service for the components I intend to buy, if
yes, cost?

I am after the Intel E8400 CPU which seems out of stock in your shop, can
you provide an accurate
time for delivery, or are you able to transfer one from another of your
shops to complete this order?

Thanking you in advance

Depends on the branch.

I found that the stupid cow in the Sydney branch was a terminal

whatever she felt like doing. On a number of ocassions.

The Briz branch was fine on a number of ocassions.

Yeah, that was the problem I had, the stupid cow ignored my instructions
to add the cost of the freight to the visa charge. She kept charging the cost
of the goods to the visa and sending it COD for the freight, even when I
sent her the url of the APO freight calculator so she only had to insert the
weight and see what the freight cost would be. She appeared to do it that
way because it was a bit easier for her, even tho I told her a number of
times that I didnt want it done that way, because I had to show up at the
post office to pay the COD charge, whereas if she added the freight cost
to the visa charge, it would be delivered with no action on my part.
I find it really annoying to have asked seemingly simple questions to get such a lame reponse!

I have bought many items from Umart. And Umart have always been good to
deal with when I have a warranty issue.

I have only dealt with the Milton Bris, and have always picked up my
purchases.

I have two complaints
1. It is impossible to get an estimated freight charge if I want delivery.
This would be what I choose because parking is a nightmare for pickups.
2. 3% for Mastercard/Visa is a ripoff. Umart has a major turnover. I
would think that Mastercard/Visa costs to them is 1%

The size and weight will change depending on whether the system is
assembled and shipped or packed as individual boxes and shipped. I
suggest you just email them back and ask for a shipping quote once you
decide how you want the items. If you're not serious about buying from
them, like most buyers, then don't waste their time. If you are, then
reply to their email and ask for clarification. I've been happy with my
dealings with them.

It didnt me, I stopped using the sydney branch after that stupid cow did
that to me twice, and used the briz branch instead and that worked fine.
There's an awful lot to be said for paypal and costs up front

Trouble is that that was before anyone was accepting
paypal for hardware sales, except on ebay.
even if it does ease a bit of a surcharge out of you.

The use of visa almost always did with anyone except the likes of Dick Smith too.

And is a lot easier to use if they claim they shipped it and didnt too.
Maybe he likes being frustrated?
Mad.
Nor me for the last few years. Currently waiting for delivery of a
750gb jobbo since i'm getting quite low on storage room again.

Yeah, been toying with the idea of making up another PVR with a pair of 1GB
drives and a pair of PCIe Digital Now digital TV capture cards so I can have it
just record everything on 4 channels and I can sort out what I want to bother
watching when I come home after being away for a week or two etc.

Currently I program what I want recorded in advance and thats
not convenient when I want to be away for a week or two etc.
Luckily over the years drive size has increased at
about the same rate as the amount i want to store.

Yeah, me too, tho it isnt always the best $/GB.
I recently bought my 1st laser mouse, a real el-cheapo job but i think more will follow.

Yeah, I'd never go back to balled mice again, and never use corded mice again either.

I should have said that I'd get the supplier to assemble at least the motherboard,
cpu and ram and run a decent checker on that to make sure the motherboard
likes the ram and use what they recomment ram wise instead if it doesnt like it.

These DDR2 systems are still much too twitchy ram wise.
I'm a keyboard man myself and lettering always wears
out, but like everything they're cheap to replace.

I got sick of that once I changed to cordless keyboards and mice.
That crippling was probably that heart transplant,
they must have found another cold black one ;)

Nar, I managed to do that with a chainsaw. Cant believe I was actually that stupid.

Wasnt permanent, but it was a mobility problem just when the warranty expired.

I didnt care that much about it since it was a corded keyboard and I had
changed over to cordless keyboards and mice by then and I was only
going to monster MS on the warranty because I was royally pissed off
that they were arseholes enough to claim that it wasnt covered by the
warranty and I rather enjoy ****ing over arseholes that try stunts like that.
Yeah LG have been the gun optical drives for a while but i think i may give

The email I sent to them was to the Sale Manager in the Qld head office at
Milton.
Part of the reason for asking wether they could assemble the parts was to
reduce the freight charges, as it should then be only one box instead of
many.
The email I sent them included all the items I wanted, copied from their own
website shopping cart, so they knew exactly what needed to be assembled or
shipped.
Now I guess I did assume they would provide me with a quote based on the
items I selected, either assembled or not.
I do understand they would get many emails from ppl who would be wasting
their time, I'm self employed & the same happens to me.
That doesn't mean I can choose to not answer any questions or provide a
quotation.

As I did not get an answer from them regarding the CPU, I have since bought
an Intel E8400 on ebay, & will buy other things on ebay now.
These are items they could have sold to me by answering a couple of simple
straight forward questions.

I've ever seen anyone do anything else than ship in more than two boxes, one
for the monitor and one for everything else, even when they arent assembled.
The email I sent them included all the items I wanted, copied from their own website shopping cart, so they knew
exactly what needed to be assembled or shipped.

I guess its not too surprising that they didnt bother to try to calculate the total weight
when you hadnt yet decided whether it was going to be assembled by them or not.
Now I guess I did assume they would provide me with a quote based on the items I selected, either assembled or not.

I'd personally let the person decide that before bothering with a
formal quote on the shipping cost unless they pay a fixed rate etc.
I do understand they would get many emails from ppl who would be

Thats likely to end up costing you more in freight than you would have paid umart.

Sure, but most dont religiously answer all the questions in an email,
essentially because its too much work when so many of the emails
dont result in a sale, and even when they do, you've got to remember
that any operation like that is working on very slim margins and making
a profit with that type of operation is minimising the effort that has to
be put into making each sale.

A very simple thing to quote on then eh?

Rubbish!
As if they don't know what the items weigh, they do this all the time don't
they?
I asked for a price on assembly which they declined to quote & an assembled
system would take up much less cubic's than individual items packaged in a
large box & I'm sure they would have a std cost for freight of assembled
systems.
I'd personally let the person decide that before bothering with a
formal quote on the shipping cost unless they pay a fixed rate etc.

If they had quoted me on assembly I could have decided, but I'm not about to
agree to an unknown cost.
Thats likely to end up costing you more in freight than you would have
paid umart.

Less, the CPU was cheaper including freight than their list price without
freight.
Same for the GPU, Ram, HDD, keyboard, mouse & OS.
I cant find the MB, monitor, case or PSU just yet but no doubt i will.
And a lost sale was worth...??
Based on what others are selling the same items for on ebay, they would have
made a fair profit.
Which is maybe why they aren't bothered by the prospect of losing a $2700.00
sale.

Lets not miss the point here...they didn't answer a single one of my
questions.
Simply to reply with a std cut & paste reply isn't good enough in my books.
However, they do get credit for actually replying all the same.

A very simple thing to quote on then eh?

Depends on whether they are paying by weight or not.

Thats how Aust Post charges for that sort of parcel.

We'll see...
As if they don't know what the items weigh, they do this all the time don't they?

Nope, they just take the parcel to the post office and pay what they get charged.
I asked for a price on assembly which they declined to quote & an assembled system would take up much less cubic's
than individual items packaged in a large box

You dont know that either. They normally do manage
to put the individual bits into the case quite adequately.
& I'm sure they would have a std cost for freight of assembled systems.

Your surety is completely irrelevant to how Aust Post charges.
If they had quoted me on assembly I could have decided, but I'm not about to agree to an unknown cost.

Your problem.
Less, the CPU was cheaper including freight than their list price without freight.

Pity about all the rest of the components.
Same for the GPU, Ram, HDD, keyboard, mouse & OS.
I cant find the MB, monitor, case or PSU just yet but no doubt i will.

And you may well end up paying more in freight than you would have if you had got it all from umart.
And a lost sale was worth...??

What matter is the profit on the particular transaction.
Based on what others are selling the same items for on ebay, they would have made a fair profit.

You have no idea what they paid for the items.
Which is maybe why they aren't bothered by the prospect of losing a $2700.00 sale.

Or they just dont bother with fools like you who mostly dont end up ordering from them.
Lets not miss the point here...they didn't answer a single one of my questions.

You're lying now.
Simply to reply with a std cut & paste reply isn't good enough in my books.

Your problem.

They dont give a flying red **** what you 'think'

Australia post clearly indicates their charges

Its so damn easy even a f**cked up unit like you could do it!
We'll see...

Nope, they just take the parcel to the post office and pay what they get

oh bull shit! your clutching now rod. Comming up with shit like
that...sheez.

As if they are going to take every parcel down to the post office, get a
price for postage, return to the shop, inform the customer the charges and
then stroll on back to the post office and send them on their merry way,
assuming the customer agrees to pay the postage......Absolute Rubbish!!

and again...... http://www1.auspost.com.au/pac/aus_parcel.asp

Bullocks
When was the last time you saw a MB in its original packaging?
Most MB barely fit in a case as it is.
Your surety is completely irrelevant to how Aust Post charges.

Just one more time for the dummy
http://www1.auspost.com.au/pac/aus_parcel.asp
Your problem.

Nope, their problem...saving myself money buying elsewhere.
Pity about all the rest of the components.

A Pity, why?
GPU $317.00 incl postage & insurance - saved $42.00 + Umart postage
CPU $300.00 "" "" "" "" "" "" - saved $Umart postage
MS XP Pro $200.00 " " " " " - saved $19.00 + Umart postage
Ram $107.50 " " " " " " " - saved $111.50 + Umart
postage
Monitor $386.75 " " " " " " " - saved $12.25 + Umart
postage

And you may well end up paying more in freight than you would have if you
had got it all from umart.

Maybe more in actual freight, but much less overall.
What matter is the profit on the particular transaction.

I couldn't give a rats arse what they paid for the items.

wipe your chin.
You're lying now.

No, you just can't read.

nope, theirs
in fact, their problem is saving me money....lol
costing me a little bit of time, but ebay is fun :)

Last time I ordered on thanks, ****wit.
Most MB barely fit in a case as it is.

Thanks for that completely superfluous proof that you have never ever
had a ****ing clue about anything at all, and why umart made an obscene
gesture in your general direction and didnt bother too much with your email.

I already said that I told their sydney office about that, ****wit.

Nope, no problem for them that they dont
have to waste their time with a fool like you.

We'll see if you actually get what you wanted and save anything.

Any 2 year old could leave that for dead, child.

Yep, everyone can see for themselves that that is a bare faced lie.

Never had any problems with my logitech keyboards except that the
lettering
wears off the most commonly used keys, but then so does everyone else's
and Microsoft isnt prepared to cover that under their warranty. I was
going
to **** MS over using the ACCC on that, but managed to cripple myself
just as the warranty ran out so didnt get a chance to do that.

Logitech did claim that thats covered by their warranty, and I have had
the
lettering wear off on two of them, but havent gotten around to holding
them
to their warranty, remains to be seen what they do when it comes to the
crunch.

At work we had keyboards that have double molding so that the whole key has
to be literally worn away before you can't see the number anymore. Finger
nails end up slowly grinding a groove into the keys. We brought them about 8
years ago and have never seen them since. All are still working.

I have two complaints
1. It is impossible to get an estimated freight charge if I want
delivery. This would be what I choose because parking is a nightmare for
pickups.
2. 3% for Mastercard/Visa is a ripoff. Umart has a major turnover. I
would think that Mastercard/Visa costs to them is 1%

Why would it be 1%? I don't think anyone is 1%. Even kmart isn't 1%.

I'm a merchant that recently changed providers.
I went fom a bank that charged a lower monthly fee but had a standard credit
rate of just under 2% (Diners and Amex commissions are higher) and a higher
set charge for direct debit cards.
To a bank that charges a higher monthly access fee but was lower for direct
debit cards and has variable rates for Visa Mcard.
For standard cards they charge me under 1% but those business cards and
other premium types attract a higher 3% rate. I presume it's to pay for
those rewards associated with the premium cards.
