No, of course not. There are no legitimate sources from which to
download Microsoft operating systems or major applications, unless
you're doing so via a very expensive MSDN subscription.

Are you certain it is not legit? Your assertion doesn't make sense

VERY briefly,
there are 2 things Microsoft does not do:
1. they do not alert customers to viruses or any other
Microsoft business with e-mail. If you get ANY e-mail that
is marked "Microsoft", delete it. It's bogus.
[[ They announced that policy several years ago, and
they've repeated it on the local news several times since.
(I live in Seattle, probably a 30-minute drive from
Microsoft's main campus, so ANY "Microsoft News" is "local

Doesn't mean I hear EVERYTHING; it means I heard that! ]]

2. they do not allow downloads of OS or major apps. Read
Windows or Office products.
too easy for the unscrupulous to grab the downloads and
infect them/can them/resell them.

Does THAT make sense?

and if you think the company making the offer is "legit",
you are likely referring to an "offshore" company.

Microsoft alerts are not unsolicited.. you would have had to ask
for them to be sent..

'Unsolicited' was not mentioned earlier. I did ask for them to be
sent. But Talahassee stated "If you get ANY e-mail that
is marked "Microsoft", delete it. It's bogus.", which is clearly
100% BS.
Re. downloads of programs, mainstream products are available
through an MSDN subscription which costs.. any other download
site offering MS Products probably should not be doing it..

http://www.studentoptions.com is still online... I'd've expected
Microsoft to stomp on such blatant piracy instantly.

BTW: I've just gone through the steps towards buying something. At
the checkout stage it requires agreement to a licence agreement
that starts:
"IMPORTANT-READ CAREFULLY: This Microsoft Student Select License
Agreement ("Student EULA") is issued to you, the student, and
documents the transfer to you of the product license(s) listed
below pursuant to the Academic Student Select Enrollment held by
the institution at which you study, Digital River Inc (the
"Outsourcer"), and Microsoft. Ireland Operations Limited The
issuance of this Student EULA is conditioned upon your current
status as a student at the time this Student EULA is issued. This
Student EULA is a legal agreement between you and Microsoft Ireland
Operations Limited ("Licensor")." ...

Looks *very* plausible...

More bad information. Microsoft has several E-mail newsletters that can be
subscribed to. For example, I got a "Microsoft Security Advisory
Notification" from them just yesterday.

What Microsoft does not do is send excutable attachments in their E-mail
messages.

VERY briefly,
there are 2 things Microsoft does not do:
1. they do not alert customers to viruses or any other
Microsoft business with e-mail. If you get ANY e-mail that
is marked "Microsoft", delete it. It's bogus.

That's not at all true. Microsoft has several newsletters by which
they distribute security alerts and other product news.

What Microsoft does not do is send out *unsolicited* email notices.

2. they do not allow downloads of OS or major apps. Read
Windows or Office products.
too easy for the unscrupulous to grab the downloads and
infect them/can them/resell them.

Again, not completely correct. MSDN subscribers can often download
various operating systems and applications.
