Lauren

hi all. ok i am trying to work out backing up outlook, we
windows xp. here's what i have done -

downloaded pfbackup.exe per another post i read here.

went through the process to install and backup.

it looks ok, the backup file is where it should be, now i
want to understand if it will work ok if i need it. if i
go to the location and open it, and email form comes up
with the backup as an attachment. i am not sure how all
this works. for instance, if it now burn this backup file
to a cd, how do i actually get it to open so i can see
the information. sorry i know this is a no brainer but i
am on a learning curve with outlook.

thanks kindly for your help.

Hi Lauren,

Good to see you're actually testing your back-ups as it is a process a lot
of people (even administrators!) tend to forget.

You can open the file by File-> Open-> Outlook Data File...
If you burn it to CD you can't open the file even if you just want to read
it. You must copy it back to your harddisk and then remove the "Read Only"
file attribute. You should then be able to open it again in Outlook as
described above.

yes yes, ok thanks roadie, so that sounds like what i do
with access in terms of after i burn, great. i'll give it
a go.

many thanks for your assistance, will be back if any
trouble.

cheers from oz. lauren

ok roadie, i understand everything you're saying. the
only problem now is that outlook data file does not look
like it's an option anywhere on my system. did a search
as well and came up blank. i found a knowledge base
article as below and thought that might have something to
do with it...

OL2002: Outlook Data Files Appear As Office Data Files in
Windows Explorer

this shows you how to rename ODF as outlook data files
but office data files isn't an option on my computer
either. so still all i can get it to do is open up as an
attachment in an email. is there something else i should
look for to open it. yikes.

thanks very much.

also when i burned the backup to cd to try it, it didn't
make it a read only file and i think it should have. the
same thing is happening if i copy it to my hard drive,
open outlook, then open backup. i get it as an email
attachment. grrrrr....what is going on for cryin out loud.

All files on a CD burned to a CD will become "Read Only" as a CD is a read
only medium. After copying the file back to your harddisk you can change it.
