Is this a good plan for motherboard replacement (major hardware upgrade)?

This is when I am going to do a repair installation to let Windows XP
Professional redetect my hardware (e.g., CPU, motherboard, RAM, etc.).

1. Uninstall any device drivers and software that won't be needed before
switching out motherboard. For example, I am dumping my SB Live so I am
dumping its software and drivers.

2. Disable system restore (useless at this point) for now.

3. Do a repair installation from the bootable XP CD.

4. Install SP2 and all the other updates.

5. Reinstall old drivers (e.g., 4in1 driver since it is VIA chipset
again) and install new drivers. Install software if needed for the new
devices like the new soundcard.

What do you think of this plan? Is there anything else I miss? I am
upgrading from an Athlon XP 2200+ to an Athlon 64 3200.

Thank you in advance. :)

Don't forget to install the mobo drivers that should be on a
CD with the new mobo.

Otherwise, looks like it should work well.

That looks pretty well OK to me. Put Restore back in action between 3
and 4; and check its settings so as not to provide too much space; the
default 12% of a large drive seems too much for its own good; keep it
under 1000MB.

It might perhaps be better to put 5 before 4, at least to the extent of
the 4 in 1 drivers

Doing SP2 - for which use a CD of it, don't try it via Update and the
net - will mean that you should not see more than a couple of further
updates; and those will be ones you can defer. Get it done, or at very
least the old basic firewall in place, before ever connecting to the net

Also you may find that this has put activation over the top to the point
where you have to activate by phoning in before you can boot other than
to Safe mode. You may be OK, but be prepared for the need

Hi, you could have used the files and settings transfer wizard to preserve
and documents, e-mails, newsgroups and all associated settings.....
