Is this a beta version of vista?

I have Vista Home Premium pre-installed on new laptop. Under the section
'Problem Reports and Solutions' it says at he bottom 'Upgade to the latest
retail version of Windows Vista'. If I expand this it reads...
'The problem was caused by Windows Vista, which was created by Microsoft
Corporation. You are running a beta version of Windows Vista, which is no
longer supported by Microsoft Corporation.'

Am I really running a beta version as it says?

Impossible to tell, based upon the information provided. What does the
laptop's manufacturer have to say about this issue? They certainly be
the first ones to ask, since they provided the OS installation.

You can determine you actual version by clicking Start > Run > Winver.
What you're looking for is Version 6.0 (Build 6001: Service Pack 1).
Beta and Release Candidate versions will have a build number below 6000.

Well, have you downloaded all the recent updates from Windows Update? It sholdnt be a beta version, their is no way a company would sell a laptop w/ a beta version of an OS. What kinds of laptop is it? And did you buy it brand new?

It appears that the OS is beta version. Can you contact the vendor from
whom you purchased the laptop?

It was a new laptop - Sony Viao. The version is 6 SP1 which was updated last
week.

Hi,

Likely no, you are not running a beta. I still see this common error on
production machines. I've yet to recieve a satisfactory explanation as to
why it occurs, but I believe it to be a leftover generic response from the
beta phase that simply was never removed.

As Bruce has stated, you need only run winver and verify that your build is
6000 or 6001 to eliminate any possibility that you are running a beta
distribution.

It's a new Sony Viao. Through automatic updates it is now Version 6 (SP1). I
don't know if this message was there from the start or been introduced.

Hi Rick, The build is version 6 as verified by start-run-winver. Thanks for
putting my mind as rest.

Hi, Bob.

Vista went RTM - to much fanfare - well over a year ago. But SP1 was in
beta until last month. And SP1's release was a bit spasmodic because a few
drivers caused problems with it. SP1 is now available (as of 3/18/08) on
Windows Update and will be pushed by Automatic Update to stragglers starting
April 18.

Your new machine may have been produced during the confusion over SP1, and
the "beta" message may be meant to apply only to SP1, not to Vista itself.

But Rick's explanation is more likely. ;^}

Vista was alpha quality when it was RTM
now with SP1 its still beta quality.

At least your PC says the truth...

The build 6000 or 6001 follows the Version in winver. The problem has been
there since the beginning of RTM and Rick's explanation is the best
available.

Run Winver At Command Prompt And If You See The Following Next 2 The Build
6001 Number: V.###, Whereas V.### = A 3 Digit Beta Build Number, Then You Are
Running A Beta Version Of Windows Vista Service Pack One, Just FYI. If There
Is No V.### Next 2 The Build 6001, Then You Are Running Windows Vista SP1 RTM
(RTM = Which Stands 4 Release To Manufacturing = Gold Or Final Release), Just
FYI.

I Am Still Boycotting Vista However, As I Have Seen No Big Improvement With
Service Pack One RTM, May Bee Microsoft Will Get it Right With Service Pack
2, If not There Is Always Microsoft Windows 7.0 In 2010, Just FYI.

P.S. Until Then I Will Continue 2 Use Ubuntu Full Time, And I Will Return 2
Windows Vista SP1 RTM Only When I Need 2 Update The BIOS, Just FYI.

Thanks for that. Winver gives me...
Version 6.0 (Build 6001: Service Pack 1)
so I take it that at least i am not on an unsupported beta version.
Again thanks.
