Is there some built-in MS anti-virus scanner, etc?

Thanks agaoin. I fund this one too.
http://www.combofix.org/download.php

IMPORTANT : ComboFix is extremely powerful , You should not run
ComboFix.exe unless you are asked to by a trained helper

Don't let this scare you it's a disclaimer from the programmer. It will NOT
remove vital start up or reg files. It possible that it will cause issues
with third party software if at all. But I've had no issues in the 10 or so
instances I needed to use it.
Wait a second. If he's helping me, who's in charge!

I just threw this out there. It's helped me so much in the past and even
recently with the faux IE page that says your machine is infected. This is
why I chimmed in.
But seriously, the descriptions give a lot of warnings, but also say
this:

"ComboFix also displays a report that can be used by trained helpers
to remove malware that is not automatically removed by the program.

The report will point to "questionable" entries that you would need to
remove yourself if you felt it necessary. Many entries are self explanitory
and contain
Please note that running this program without supervision can cause
your computer to not operate correctly. Therefore only run this
program at the request of an experienced helper."

Yet the progrma removes things (malware) automatically!!!! I'm sort
of reckless but that scares me.

I'm pretty sure it was designed by a guy from McAfee for use with WinXP (any
SP)
Having used Hijack or any Reg editor you should have made back ups
immediately before removing anything.

Yeah; what would HE know about it?

I guess my assurance that its a legit utility and it works for the posted
issue is all he really has.
I wouldn't have made the suggestion if I thought it would produce unwanted
results.

But, whatever he chose to use is at his discretion.

At first I thought Bert meeant me, but I later realized he meant "HE"
to be the author.

As long as it doesn't do things automatically, I'll be fine.

And on which sources do you base your supposition?

PS: Did you make my daughter's new lunch box and pencil case?

Google the authors name for more on his history as I do remember reading he
was a former programmer at McAfee. There was (and most likely still is) a
dedicated forum for support if you have further questions. I however can not
link you to it.

(P.S.) No, but I did pose for the box art. =D

I know the author and the various forums where he posts, thank you.

But we're still friends. We do favors for each other. In this case,
I'll probably learn a lot about computers, and I'd rather learn on
hers than on mine.

Reminds me of the story of a gal who moved into an apartment in New York.
The first thing she did was find a single male in the building with a tool
kit. Whenever she had a "honey-do," she'd invite him over for dinner. Their
mental conversations went like this:

She: "He's a miracle worker. He can put up a towel rack so it won't fall
down and all I have to do is throw a couple more potatoes in the pot!"

He: "She's a miracle worker. For a couple of the right kind of toggle bolts,
I get a home-made rack-of-lamb dinner!"

Then they had sex.

Everybody wins.
