I want to set up my laptop for 2 uses...
user 1...ME(labeled by my name)....but all my normal everyday crap...
user 2...ME(labeled as Tuning Software)....but very specififc programs
only with no access to all teh other stuff.
I need to set it up because I am a sales rep and would like to hide all
of my normal stuff and be able to allow customers to see the Automotive
Vehicle Tuning software I am offering...with a hands on experience, and
not have to worry about anything else getting touched....
in this way I would have a firm limit on useage

I dont even mind if I would have to format and reinstall everything if
necessary

and I only want the Tuning software to show up in the programs menu for
that user and no access to anything else unless I specify it to be ok.

I dont care what I have to do to make it happen....I just want it to
happen.

Hello, soundengineer. One of the benefits of XP-Pro over XP-Home is its
granularity of control over NTFS type file permissions. Consider upgrading
to XP-Pro for that reason. You can then right-click any file (or folder)
and, using the Security tab in Properties view, specify which accounts may
access which files and in what way. This gives near complete control over
which user accounts can see or in any way access almost all files (or
shortcuts) that exist on a HDD. You should always keep your "owner" account,
specified when XP was first activated, password protected and with 100%
access to everything (so that you can fix any mistakes with file permissions
that you might invoke onto a more limited account). It's definitely worth
learning all about NTFS Permissions; it's not that hard to learn although
actually implementing it properly can be very complex and time consuming.
When working with NTFS permissions, these 2 utilities help a lot in
diagnostic of permissions problems:
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Filemon.html
http://www.sysinternals.com/Utilities/Regmon.html
but they both require being used while logged in using an Administrator
account.
