Is there any reason to wait for SP2?

Then you should complain to MS. They have God-knows how many
billions of dollars in the bank, but are too cheap to add enough
bandwidth at times of high demand, like releasing a Service Pack!

Put the blame where it belongs!

Ah... that would be the linux servers used by their contractor for downloads.
Blame the cheap arrogant bastards in
Redmond!

No, wrong placement.

Those servers could handle all the bandwidth that MS is willing to pay for.
And MS could contract with others to provide more bandwidth at times of high
demand like now, but MS rather trick people into Auto Update trickle
downloading of SP2 over days.
No, wrong placement.

It's all the fault of Linux? You are just full of it.

I am shocked that you would say that. Shocked! :-D

I might just live dangerously and just install SP2 without a lot of
precautions. I already downloaded it. I'm going to leave firewall ZA
working, but I'll close everything else, including anti-virus AVG.

I assume SP2 will create its own pre-install restore point.

I'll see you on the other side.

If you only have one disk and one partition,
I would spend your time making sure you have your P/C in
good shape hardware wise,
and all the current drivers installed,
to reduce the SP2 install risk.

If you can not backup to a CD or second partiton / drive,
and something does go wrong,
all those driver intall and any licensed program packages
you downloaded, e-mail PST fles,
and the 266MB IT SP2 file will be gone.
If the disk is bad find out now.
This means you are staring over.

Do a Chkdsk from computer, tools tab and check both boxes.
re-boot and let the disk be scanned complertly.

Create a folder called BKUPSP1
Run a disk intensive program, NTBAckup to this folder for
the a C: partiton, SSI, and under the +C: folders,
deselect tthe BKUPSP1 folder. Run wuth the compare after
option to insure readable, in advanced tabs.
Then do it again and call the backup file "FreeSpacefor
SP1Scrub.bkf"
You can delete it just before install of SP2.
This will tell you that your disk is good and that the
next GB of space is good. Now delete the
file "FreeSpacefor SP1Scrub.bkf" just before you install
( turnoff off AV, disconnect from net, D-click IT 266 MB
file and don't turn on / off any appliacinces.

Risk is limited now to internal hareware or incompat
programs which will need to be fixed or upgraded anyway.

Nope, there is no reason to wait for SP2.

a) SP2 Network Install and Windows Update install will be pretty the same -
the Windows Update Version will be much smaller, as it checks you PC for the
stuff it needs. The Network Installer is contains everything - whatever you
need for updating lots of PCs.

Maybe there will be some bugfixes for the Windows Update Version of WinXP
SP2, there is some trouble with Microsoft Software and the new firewall.

But the bluetooth funktionality rocks! =)

Greetings,
Hans

What's even worse....a liberal.

Then what are you? A fascist? A socialist? An Oligarchist? A Monarchist?
Or an Anarchist?

Liberalism - A political theory founded on the natural goodness of humans
and the autonomy of the individual and favoring civil and political
liberties, government by law with the consent of the governed, and
protection from arbitrary authority.

If you believe in constitutional representative government, then you are a
LIBERAL! If not, then you believe in some form of tyranny!

Ah, sweet tyranny. Don'tcha love it!
It's the Socialism that some liberals advocate that sets people off. Believe
me, you don't want to live under a socialist regime.

I don't. It's more likely a fascist state at the moment.

Probably the best reason not to wait is there is no option to save the file.
It should be in the following location:
%windowsroot%\softwaredistribution\download

However, that presupposes an auto-update user thinks to look for the file to
save it in the first place. Having the SP2 file comes in handy if you need
to do a clean install because if you don't have it, you need to download it
again.

Also, I'm not sure the auto-update file would be the same as the full
download since auto-update will assess your system and may only download
what the user needs at a given time, hence, saving that file may not be good
enough.

I believe in Liberalism, just like Benjamin Franklin. Who is spinning in

I don't know what when wrong, but installing SP2 via the current
download for IT professionals was a disaster for me.

I can't get Win XP to boot up. I even did a repair install. I get a
blue screen saying Windows has shut down to prevent damage etc. ...
0x0000007B (etc.)

The next step, according to the blue screen, is chkdsk /f, but I ran
into a lot of trouble last time I did that.

I disconnected the HD and put in an old 15 GB, which I knew had an XP
copy that worked with this hardware configuration. I'm running off
that now.

I'm turning off automatic updates until I can figure out what happened
or what to do.

Huh, I just noticed; it's trying to update right now. I better stop
this.
