Is there any hardware or software way of putting a volume attenuator into my system?

My wife is super-sensitive to loud sounds. Many of my mp3 music
pieces seem to be at very low volume, so I have to increase the volume
of my internal speakers to hear them. Then I forget to set the volume
back down.

Now if I get mail or something, the sounds coming out are very loud
and she gets pissed.

Is there something I can put into my system that will limit the
maximum db output?

Using "sound recorder", you can alter the volume of the offending sound that
is louder than the norm. Save and exit. The sound will now be more in line
with the other sounds.

You might take a look at an excellent, freeware leveler at:

http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/index.php

It will annalize the sound levels, and equalize the volume for an
album, or your entire MP3 library. Don't be put off by the site right
now. They have just moved to a new provider and haven't got it fancy
yet. Probably best to go to the Download tab. I haven't used it
quite this way, but you should be able to set the volume so that it
matches the other noises.
