Is there an icon to use showing visible cells only?

You mean to limit the selection to visible cells only?

In xl2003:
tools|customize|Commands tab|Edit Category|look for Select visible cells
Drag it to your favorite toolbar

Or hit alt-;
(alt-semicolon)
