Is there a text version HCL for Vista

R

Rastaman

I would like to buy a tv tuner card that is compatible with Vista, or more
specifically the Vista Media Center.

Since I do not currently have one, I can't check it with the upgrade advisor
on the MS website.

Does anyone know of a text version of the HCL for Vista?

Thanks

There is no HCL for Vista published by Microsoft. You have to google
for 'vista compatible hardware wiki'...

Not per se. They have replaced it with the Vista Upgrade Advisor which you
might find useful. I find it often inaccurate. You can download it and try
it here. It lists 3 devices on this machine it says need to be replaced and
says my sound card doesn't work but you'd have to tell that to Glen Fry and
the Eagles right now who are playing through my four speakers. I don't know
if Jim Allchin has talked to the Eagles lately or any of the other thousands
of groups and orchestras I'm playing. Maybe when he leaves January 30
he'll talk to them about the Upgrade Advisor giving so much false info.

It's a nice link Kizzy and also MSFT is a big company and it's not unusual
for them to contradict themselves on their websites and they have in this
situation.

If you type into Vista "Help and Support" reached on the Start Menu by
default or by typing helppane.exe into the Vista run box, which answers
about 90% of questions posted here, Hardware Compatibility Live Site or
anything close you get this message:

"Find out if your hardware is compatible with Windows (HCL)

To find out if your hardware is compatible with Windows Vista, go to the
Windows Vista Upgrade Advisor website. This website contains the information
that used to be on the Windows Hardware Compatibility List (HCL)."

The upgrade advisor is wrong much of the time, and it's a real poor
substitute for any entitty on the planet much less a hardware compatibility
list.

I plan to check the list out to see how helpful it is in my view in the next
couple days and how many of my devices are on it.

Thanks,

CH

You believed who about what?

The list on Live looks good if it's accruate and has the devices you're
intrested in and if they keep it current. As for the Upgrade Advisor scores
of us have found it dead wrong on box after box. It says the sound card I'm
using won't work on Vista and that I need a new IDE controller and a VIA
OHCI 1394 controller for Vista to run. It has been nuts every build of
Vista for over a year.

It's one more gimic to sell more hardware and in doing so more OEM
preinstalled Vista.

Yep. So I hear anyways. However it was dead on with my system. It
said the only device that wouldn't be supported was my 8 year old dialup
modem (yes -- it lasted that long). Sure enough there was no driver for
it at all. I pulled out an old modem that I salvaged as a backup. It
worked without issue using the driver in Vista.
