Is there a port or USB device limit?

My sony laptop running XP Home has been fine for a couple of years now, but
all of a sudden one of 2 BT mice won't connect, my phone won't connect BT,
and when i plug a headset into the mic & audio-out jacks, all the extenal
peripherals seem to resequence/reconnect. I don't know much about ports &
USB devices, but i have a lot of 'stuff' connected externally. Is there some
sort of upper limit in Win XP, or is this a hardware issue i need to address
w/sony? Does Windows keep ports set aside for every memory stick you have
ever used? Is there a way I can wipe the slate clean and re-allocate ports
only to the stuff I currently use?

I've heard up to 112 devices, but you are most likely having problems with
power being supplied on those ports, get a USB hub that has it's own power
supply, as each device draws it's power from the USB channel, and with a
powered hub, it will supply additional power.

Thanks for the suggestion, but everything is powered externally - either thru
a powered hub or by its own power. It's not a power problem.

There is a limit of 128 devices on the USB system. The host counts as one
so that leaves a total of 127 peripheral devices that may be connected.
Devices that you have connected but are not connected at present don't
count. I would expect a USB system that is heavily loaded to creak to some
extent though USB2 is supposed to have features to combat this.

You also cannot have more than 15 hubs between the host and any peripheral
(the root hub counting as one).

IF you hadn`t installed anything since this happened , I would suggest
a restore and if that doesn`t do it look deeper .
