Is there a freeware pop-up killer and/or evidence elimination program?

Hey there.

I'm just wondering that, is there a freeware program that kills pop-ups and
eliminates evidence on your computer, so you can protect your privacy? I
have two computers on my house, one is running Windows XP Pro, the other is
Windows 98. They both are connected to the internet by cable and shared by
using a router. Do you have any idea what are those freeware programs are
(whenever possible)?

If you have any idea, please do not hesistate to reply. Thank you.

Outpost Firewall does it for sure!

Outpost "eliminates evidence"?? , that's news to me.
Still, It's unclear what the original poster means by "eliminates
evidence", usually it either means

1) Clearing MRUs, history, cookies, autocomplete etc. More difficult to
remove is the Index.dat of history,TIF,cookies created by IE etc

or

2) Secure erasing of files.

I vaguelly remember some of the popup killers (free surf??) have some of
these functions (mostly category 1), but I personally prefer to use
seperate freeware for this.

For 1) I recommend a combination of MRUblaster, Spybot S&D . Spider (not
for Win xP) clears the index.dat, but Win XP users should use System
security suite

For 2) I recommend Eraser http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/

Update the reference file through the online update function.

Install a good HOSTS file to help stop these nasties from installing.

Not working?

So has Mozilla Firebird, which is only a browser with no email
and stuff. Looks pretty, works great and very stable even tho'
it is a beta.

Can I install Mozilla for a test run on a Windows XP machine without
screwing up IE 6.0? In case Mozilla doesn't work out, I'd like to return to
IE by just uninstalling Mozilla.

Absolutely. However, you might want to try something a little smaller,
like Mozilla Firebird, or K-Meleon. They are both smaller than Mozilla.
Moz is 11-13MB, Firebird is around 6, and KM, my default browser, is
about 5MB. All three are Gecko-based, and all offer similar pop-up
control. I've actually found KM's to be better than Moz's by a gnat's
whisker.

I tend to think the opposite- firebird is easier than mozilla, and
definately easier than kmelon. Check out this page:

What's difficult about K-meleon? I've been using since version 0.4,
before Phoenix/firebird was even around, and from the very start is has
been very simple to set up and use. I would be genuinely interested to
read a list of the things you consider make KM difficult

Great. Just "installed" Firebird. No fuss, interesting look with lots of fun
options. I think I'll spend some time with it. BTW, Firebird is doing a
great job stopping Pop-Ups. None in my first 2 hours of use.

Zone Alarm firewall can do that :

Very quick/easy to stop access from the internet.
