Dell computers come with a Dell Reinstallation CD. This is
Dell's "full version" of Windows XP and it can be used to
repair or reinstall Windows XP. It can only be used with the
Dell computer it was shipped with.

You really should be asking Dell. I do believe they use "real" install
disks. Personally, I think you could save several hundred dollars by going
to a local shop and having a system built to your specs.

Thanks very much for your help.

Yep I checked the prices on a self build and it came out to $700+-
the dell I was looking at was on sale for $599 with $100 rebate.
and office xp std.....the deal disapeared from their site overnight so
I guess now I will build my own.
again thanks for the info

Usually computer manufacturer's will install an EOM version. Basically
a version of the OS that they modified to work with their 'helping
software' and hardware config. They will usually send Restore discs
that will return the hard drive to the exact state it was in when it
left their company...basically using it will reformat/reinstall the OS
like it was when you first turn the box on.

This OS can't be transferred to another computer.

Dave,

Your incorrect statement might be the "usually" part of your reply, but it
doesn't apply to all manufacturers.

In the OP's case -- who states that he has a Dell -- your answer is clearly
wrong.

Dell includes a real XP disk with their hardware.

The Dell I bought within the last few months has a Winmdows XP install
disk not a system restore disk.

All my Dell's (3 of them) Came with actual operating system CDs. OEM does
not mean revised. OEM versions of software is usually not revised but mass
licensed to be distributed with hardware. Some companies do change some of
the software on there own, where allowed by the issuing manufacturers. Once
you put the disk into your computer, you will know if you can use it to
update your computer. It shouldn't do anything without asking you. BTW, when
one of my Dell computers stopped working, I did use that OS CD to install on
the new computer.
