Is the X850XT PE quiet?

Rick S.

We have a HTPC (in our living room) that is also sometimes
used for gaming. We're looking to upgrade our Radeon 9700
Pro video, e.g. to an X850XT PE, and we're looking for one
that doesn't sound like a vacuum cleaner.

If anyone out there has first-hand experience with these
higher-end cards, or knows of a comparative review that
includes noise levels, please respond. Thanks!

you can always change to one if these

Or check the HIS site to see if their x850xt comes with an Arctic Cooler

Well, the cooler that ATI themself use, and some others, are not
"HTPC-quiet". Thus, e.g. Arctic Cooling have some very good coolers
also for X850 XT which are preatty quiet. There are also some
manufacturers using these coolers on their boards -- for an example
H.I.S I belive had X850-cards with such coolers.

What CPU is in this system? Since you have a R9700 Pro, I guess this
system can be some years old. The CPU can also be a bottleneck -- and
if so, the a very powerful videoboard might not be taken full
advantage of.

It's a 3GHz P4 Northwood running at 3.75GHz (250FSB 1:1).
I don't think we'd be CPU limited with a faster card.

Thanks for the info (both you and the other responder).

NO!.. its a noisy POS and if I hadn't been warned about the noise I would have
thought it was broken!.. I HIGHLY recommend a 3rd party cooler to replace any
stock fan you get. (I have an Xscasy card)

Zalman has a new video card cooler that outdoes Arctic Coolers now.

That's the VGA cooler I use on my X800XL and in 5v mode it is very
quiet. Next card I buy I will pay extra for a card that already comes
with a quiet cooler so I don't have to screw around with the card and
void my warranty.
