Is the rest button the only solution?

I have found some programs which won't shut down. I can click
CTRL,ALT.DEL & see that the program is listed as not responding. I
could click end program now & never get anything to happen. All my anti
virus & spyware programs are always up to date. Is there anything else
one can do rather than having to revert to pressing the reset button?

once inside the CTRL+ALT+DEL go into proccess' and find the offending
programs and click "End Process"

That's just what I'm doing but nothing happens. The offending program
won't shut down unless I press reset.
