Is the Professional Look Really Better?

I totally agree. To me top posting is quicker, if you need to refresh your memory ya scroll down.

you would think that, and so did I when I put my stupid mug shot on a few
things at the insistence of someone who claimed there'd be benefits.

whether it looks more professional or not, it improved a key result. That's
why, as uncomfortable as it is, I leave it up.

Chris, did you checkout the keywords for the site?

I'd like to know if anyone has any real evidence that having a picture of
the site owner actually makes a difference? I've heard this before, but
most people that claim it makes a difference added their picture at the same
time they drastically updated/polished/redesigned their websites. Any real
statistics on this?

Correction, the site doesn't have keyword tag, just a title tag.

Wow, my first Web-Snob. I am impressed.

Yesh, hrms. It's just too bad the truth sounds that way. It's also sad
that after being called a liar and being patronized elsewhere in this
thread, some people still believe I'm not entitled to deliver a little
comeuppance.

But whatever; your opinion of me doesn't mean a whole lot. You can't
really know me in the day or so this unfortunate cross-over has been
occurring.

You can not tell if these "unique" visits were indeed unique. Nor can
you tell which software made the requests.

By all means choose not to design for Opera, but please make the
decision based upon realities, not incorrect supposition.

I can't see this morning, the site does actually have a keyword tag, before the title tag.

Is that really your logic? Amazing. There is a considerable amount of
educational and cultural value in learning another language. I don't
think
redesigning a Web page that uses inline frames so that it renders well in
Opera even compares, but then that's just me.

Be sure to be a dear and put that on your resume for the next design job
you apply for. I'm sure that anyone who wants a great website will agree
with you.

You can discern a considerable amount about you however. No one called you
a liar. What I told you is that you may have pulled my page from cache
because my error page contains code that sends me e-mails when errors occur
on my site none had occurred on the day that you referenced.

Personally, I think that the demeanor of these folks from the alt.* crowd
who have appeared here is clear evidence why more people don't use
newsgroups. They believe they have to tread on thin ice lest they do
something to break one of the "rules" and unleash an attack on them.

What a shame.

Tell you what. You guys send me a check each month for my hosting fees and
another one for my mailing list provider fees and another for the software
that I purchase to maintain the site and the software I write and another
one for the time that I spend developing software and writing code for my
Web site and then you can dictate to me how I should design my site and for
whom I should design it. In the meantime, I'll stick to my current plan
since it's working quite nicely.

Don't assume that everyone with a Web site is a Web designer by trade. If
you had bothered to review my Web site, you would see that the purpose of my
Web site is to generate donations for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital
and for other charities of my choice.

Unlike some folks I've heard from recently, my point here is not to flaunt
how enlightened I believe myself to be by trying to prove how inadequate
everyone else is.

The user-support person searches with a different browser[2] and finds
your site and tries to find a suitable plugin for the user who asked the

may give up and look at some other site to recommend to their user.

Well, I certainly hope you've learned a valuable lesson from all of this.
What a shame.

Indeed it is.

Your error page would have no idea that your JavaScript failed in the
visitor's browser. You would not get an email.

I'm surprised you didn't know that.
