Is SP1 needed before installing SP2?

I have Win XP Home Ed.
I know I should have the Service Packs installed.
However, the individual security updates that were offered
are all installed. I decided to get SP2 and ordered the
CD after my auto update would show that on a list to be
downloaded.
After I received the SP2 CD, I checked for new updates by
turning on the auto updater. It showed SP2 on the
download window.
I went to the Windows Update Website and it showed that I
needed SP1. That is confusing because it showed only SP2
on the list a couple of weeks prior to this.
So can I just go ahead and install SP2 from my CD, or do I
have to install SP1 first?
Thanks.

No.

Read through the help files on the CD.

Is SP1 needed before installing SP2? Na!

Just install SP2 first then perform your required updates. Set Autoupdates
to manual as well.

SP2 is cumulative, meaning all fixes from SP1 are included. No need to
install SP1 before SP2.

Thank you for the super fast replies.
I will go ahead and install SP2.

To require the install of SP1 before installing SP2 would waste millions of
extra man-hours around the world. That would be pretty dumb. Making SP2 a
stand-alone update is the only sensible way to do it.

Nevertheless, lots of other products work that way.

It has the advantage of not requiring people to download SP1
first. It has the disadvantage of requiring people who already
have SP1 installed to effectively download it a second time.

Which is better, I don't know for sure, but it's nowhere near as
clear cut as you make it out to be. From a personal point of
view, it would have been better for me if it didn't include SP1
fixes, since I already had them installed.
