Is Outlook 2007 an appropriate upgrade for Outlook 2002?

I have been operating with MS Office XP Professional on Windows XP SP2 for
about five years. All applications continue to work well except Outlook,
which has become fraught with continual problems. When I notify Microsoft
with an error message, I get a response with a link which suggests that I
upgrade to Outlook 2007, but other information I have gathered online tells
me that the 2007 upgrades apply only to the Office 2003 version. I am happy
to purchase an upgrade with the knowledge that I am getting the right one.
Other commentaries suggest that upgrading only one application will create
additional problems with MS Office, specifically that the older versions of
the application will continue to "reinstall" themselves. I am no computer
expert, simply a user of applications, and all I am trying to achieve is to
get an Outlook program which will work efficiently. Can anyone please
provide me advice? Thanks.

If you want to upgrade, then upgrade the entire suite to 2007. Upgrading only Outlook will break a number of items that you may use, such as integration with Office for using mail merges, send-to, etc.
