Is my monitor fryed?

I have a 3 year old Gateway monitor and went black last night. I was
checking my email and everything went blank. The power led is still on but
it is amber like when it is off and it flashes when the computer is turned
on. I cannot find any kind of reset button so I unplugged overnight with no
luck. Is it done?

Perhaps. Be sure the cord between monitor and PC is firmly seated - at
both ends.

Try turning on the PC first, then turning on the monitor.

Try another monitor, or your monitor on another PC.

I'm no expert but, I doubt the problem is the monitor. If you have access to
another monitor, try it. I would expect the problem to be elsewhere though.

If the other monitor doesn't work, it could be almost anything from a loose
wire to a fried mother-board. Start with the simplest things. Make sure the
connection from the PC to the monitor is secure and that you haven't
accidentally bumped a control on the monitor that may have caused the
problem. All monitors vary in the controls and access to them...???

If these things don't pan-out, no offence intended, I would suggest that you
take the PC to a "local" shop and have it checked out. I would not recommend
taking it to a Best Buy or CompUSA, etc.

Most Gateway monitors have a self test feature when there is no
signal.
Disconnect the video cable.
If you get a test screen, you know the monitor is OK.

Try a different monitor in either case to be sure because it could on
the off chance be the cable.

It could be the video card, a cable, or the monitor. If the
monitor had not been showing signs of wearing out, I would
be more suspicious of the video card being fried, perhaps it
had a cooling fan which quit and it over-heated.

If you can try, as others suggested a different monitor.
Also, you could open the case and look for signs of burnt
connections or blackened cards around the graphics card.
Did you (do you) smell any burnt odor?

You could have gotten a virus while checking the email, I
haven't checked to see if there is something going around
but it is possible that a virus could turn you monitor off
or disable the video card.

I borrowed a monitor from a friend and the other monitor works. I assume
that means my monitor is bad. I unhooked the old monitor and hooked up just
the power and still see nothing on the screen. The led still lights up but
nothing else.
Oh well, I've had my eye on a nice flat panel at Best Buy. $400 after
rebates for a Viewsonic 17"

Thanks for all the input on my question.

Update all drivers from your manufacturer's website for the machine.
(May need a BIOS upgrade as well as a possible software package from them.)

If that fails.. Contact the manufacturer verbally.
