Is my hard drive heading for failure?

L

ll

Each time I startup winxp I receive this message in DOS -
" 1720 - Smart Hard Drive detects imminent failure "

I also used the os to check my hard drives, while verifying free space (
stage 5 of 5) it found unspecified error occurred in drive D.

Is my hdd heading for failure?
Is there any option other than replace the drive?

Yes, your drive is going bad or has gone bad.

No, short of replacement there is nothing you can do - other than wait for
it to fail completely - bit by bit!

You already have your answer - get a new drive today or you may loose
everything.

I had the same problem with an 80GB HD on a three year old Compaq. Bought
a 120GB HD on sale at Staples for $69 and had it installed for $79. My
computer is faster and since they cloned the old drive to the new I didn't
loose anything and most of all it's done right. Happy as a lark.

Does one "loose" everything by having too much wine?

BTW in addition to my last post you should not start running diagnostic
programs on your hard drive until you have made a backup of your important
data. Diagnostic tools will stress the drive and could cause immediate
failure. BACKUP.

Yes SMART is the drive's internal checks saying 'I am about to fail'
Is there any option other than replace the drive?

Not realistically. Back up as first thing you do. get a test program
from the maker. Replace

If it's early in the morning and you are typing too fast to see the typo
they do - didn't you have anything better to do when reading that?

Having seen the same error, I can only say: "Back up your data
daily until you replace that drive."

On those machines I on which I've seen those S.M.A.R.T. warnings,
catastrophic hard drive failures invariably followed. Some hard
drives lasted for a few days after the warnings first appeared, one
lasted months, and some lasted only minutes. I suppose the one that
lasted months could be considered a false alarm, as months hardly
translate to "imminent," but, on the whole, I'd suggest you take the
warnings seriously.

Not a bad price at all. What brand was it?

and had it installed for $79.

Now that was a rip off. You probably could have done it yourself in
roughly 15 minutes, assuming you'd never done it before.

It is a Maxtor 6Y120PO with a 120GB. Works great.

After I read the installation instructions, I figured it would be safer and
less nerve racking having it done by someone who specializes in these
matters. Now, I'm happy as a lark. I think it was money well spent.

I agree with Bruce that $79 is much too much for this. But if
you're happy with the result, that's what counts.

Next time you might want to ask a friend who's done this before
to show you how. It's really very easy--you set the jumper on the
drive to slave, mount the drive--typically with four screws--and
you plug in two cables--one for power and one for data.

But $79 to ghost an image might have been worth it to him also. I
thought he was replacing the drive - and drive copy software does not
come with every retail product and not at all with OEM drives. The cost
of purchasing Ghost or some other product, learning how to use it,
etc... appears to have been worth it to him (and my have been beyond his
current ability).
