Is Mozilla v1.4 RC3 Stable?

R

Rob

I have been running Mozilla v1.3 but I have had problems with the bookmarks
mysteriously disappearing.

Should I upgrade to v 1.3.1 or to the newer v1.4 RC 3?
Is v1.4 RC 3 stable enough?

I'm using 1.3.1 and having no problems with the bookmarks. I'm too chicken
to use the bleeding edge version so I can't speak to how buggy it might be.

No problems here with 1.4. You might want to read through the Mozilla
and Netscape groups also.

Thanks for the info. How do I upgrade? Do I have to uninstall Mozilla v1.3
first?

I suggest 1.3.1 and *not* one of the 1.4 RCs, especially if you're on
Win9x: there is a serious resource leak bug in the Windows 1.4 builds.

Mozilla 1.4 final is out as of today. Looks like Netscape might be a
reasonable alternative, too. NS 7.1 was just released today, and based
on Moz 1.4. Actually has a feature or two not included in Moz. More info
at http://www.mozilla.org/ .

I'm having severe problems with RC3 and newsgroups, with it locking up
so much that I haven't actually managed to *use* it to post or read the
groups yet, sigh.

I'm using Netscape 7.1 now, and I tried Mozilla 1.4. Both are
flaky in the news reader. My list of posted messages does all
kinds of weird things. Just a second ago, it started to scroll up
by itself and wouldn't stop. Before that the header window was
resizing itself up and down over and over, and wouldn't stop until
I changed groups. Also, I can't get it to show threads when I've
got "show only new messages" selected. All this crap wasn't
happening in Mozilla 1.3, so its new defects. The browser part
works well, however.

I'd heard that users weren't all that satisfied with 1.3, so far as
usenet and email goes, either. I use 1.3 as a browser only and I'm
perfectly happy with it. No faults to report.

I'd like to hear about how other users feel about 1.4 as a browser.
To be honest, I think that's asking too much, to be a good browser AND
a good email and usenet program. I have a separate program for these
things, and no wish to combine them.

I just dumped Netscape 7.1 tonight, and reloaded Mozilla 1.3. The
mail and news part of the suite is much, much better than in
version 1.4 -- they really screwed some things up in 1.4,
including making some undesirable changes to the interface.

Example, in 1.3 when you select "text only" for your toolbars, you
get a nice, thin bar where your address window and Mozilla icon
is, but in 1.4, when you select "text only" the damn thing stays
the same width! How dumb is that? I mean, somebody actually had to
*make this change* deliberately. The same is true of Netscape
7.1, of course, since N 7.1 and M 1.4 are the same under the skin.

In version 1.3 of Mozilla, the browser works well, and the mail
and news work well. It is a much better choice than version 1.4.

You can tell Netscape about your objections to the changes by going to

Thanks for the warnings.

It's been very good to me. And it's now out as a final. And
it's also out as Netscape 7.1

Good suggestion, except that neither Netscape nor Mozilla cares
what users think of their browsers. I've learned this over the
past couple of years while trying out various incarnations of
Mozilla and the new Netscape (which are the same browser). It's
always a good thing for people to express their views about these
matters, but I can tell folks, it won't do any good.

You can say that, but it doens't make it true. I have seen
Netscape make changes based on user feedback, and I know a few
people who sit at the tables with the developers and discuss
user feedback. Perhaps YOUR specific needs haven't yet been
addressed, but all feedback is considered.

You know this for a fact? Impressive.

Why not ask for a refund and use IE instead? I'm sure that *its* developers
will just drop everything and bend over backwards to meet a customer's
demands. Personally speaking, I would rather score a bargain at a bazaar
than beg for alms at the cathedral.

Do you even have a clue about how the open source process works? Of the many
things it is driven by, feedback is one of the most fundamental and
predominant.

It is so; it can be documented. So either back up your claim
with some examples and evidence, or apologize for lying. Or at
least accept that while not every request may be immediately
implemented, all reasonable requests are in fact reviewed by the
developement team.
