Is Microsoft works spreadsheet the same as Excel?

I just purchases Microsoft works and they have a spreadsheet. I am only
familiar with Excel. Is the spreadsheet in Works the same as Excel?
 
I think they are vaguely similar, but Works is the "watered down" version.
Excel cannot read Works files, but in Works you can save a file in Excel
format and later open it in Excel.
