Is Malicious s/w removal tool part of WDefender?

O

occam

Every so often the Malicious Software Removal update comes with the rest
- yesterday i was KB 890830.

Is this part of the Windows Defender suit of tools, or is it something I
can/should invoke separately?

If it is a stand alone thing - how do I start it?

thanks

Hello occam,

The Malicious Software Removal tool is generally (always??) released each
month as part of the Patch Tuesday updates. When it's downloaded and
installed it executes, but you won't see anything unless there is some sort
of malware that is detected.

If you want to run it on demand at any time, click Start | Run. In the Open
window type MRT.EXE and click OK.

Alan has given the right answers.

This is a free-standing utility often released at the same time as the
monthly security updates. It often focuses on rootkits, and it is
cumulative, with new malware added each month.

You can read more about it here:

http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

I like to remember to look in at that URL monthly to learn what has been
added each month.

Microsofts SIR (Security Intelligence Report) details the statistics on how
much malware is removed by this tool, as I recall, and it is pretty
impressive.

Thank you both (Alan, Bill).

I certainly didn't mean to imply that you didn't!

I usually put that phrase in there just to emphasize that although I'm
posting to a thread that you've already answered, I'm not doing so to
correct your answer--just to add additional stuff....

Hi Bill,

Nah, I know that you weren't correcting me. I enjoyed the compliment. Thank
you. :)
