I cannot use the windows malicious software removal tool successfully.
It detected the infected files in my system but got hung on the stage
where it is supposed to clean them. What could possibly be the problem?

Boot to safe mode. Then click Start > Run. In the Open: field type in
mrt, click OK or press Enter, click the Next button and select Full
scan. That should get you to the point where the scan finishes and it
should ask you to restart again.

* If Run isn't on the Start Menu press the Windows key + r
simultaneously to access it.

When the system has been restarted after the initial scan of the MRT is
done, suggest you run TDSSKiller by Kaspersky:
http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?qid=208280684

Then finish up with MBAM, as Elmo previously suggested.

NOTE:

If you *don't* do any online banking, financial transactions, enter any
passwords for email accounts, Facebook, My Space, the iTunes Music
Store, etc., then you have nothing to lose and can leave the OS as is.

If you do *any* of the above and a rootkit was detected & removed, then
strongly suggest that you start changing the passwords to those accounts
*AFTER* formatting the Hard Drive and reinstalling XP.
